Check Engine Light directly after pickup

Hi all,

Just picked up an absolutely gorgeous Galaxy Blue MT Limited today. I'm in love. Except for one thing: my passenger noticed about 30 minutes after we left the dealer that the check engine light was on! I have no idea if it had been on since we left the dealership or not. I left the salesperson I bought it from a message on their machine, we'll see what they have to say tomorrow.

I don't feel or see any problems with the car, but the fact that I of all people chose the one car with problems is upsetting. Ah well.

What would you all do in this case? Return it under lemon law? Stop worrying? Or just bring it to the dealer and get them to give me some Subaru swag for my troubles?

(And there's been absolutely zero thrashing of the car or anything, I'm following the break-in procedures. That said, when I picked it up it had 25 miles on the odometer, so somebody may have had their way with it...)

The CEL is permanently on from the factory until the dealer does the standard PDI. Before you freak out about having a lemon, bring the car back to the dealership and make sure they performed that properly.

Correct ^^ Don't sweat it, drop back by the dealership, they'll take care of it.

I'd check the gas cap to make sure it's on tight.

This. We made fun of a coworker for years because he had to go to the dealer to find it he didn't snap the cap.

My car had the check engine light during test drive - before dealer prep. When delivered the light was off - been off for 560 miles.

Check the gas cap as mentioned then the dealer...

It's mysteriously disappeared a few minutes after I checked the gas cap. Weird. Whatever!

Good to hear it wasn't anything big! Why they can't just make a light specifically for that I don't know... Check engine to me means A LOT more than check the cap...

It's worth getting an OBD2 scanner show you can check the code yourself before trusting anything the dealerships/mechanics tell you.

It's easy to pull codes with ODB2

Glad to see you figured it out! It's a good thing I read the manual for the car before I picked it up, since securing the cap on this car is different from my old car (only one click compared to three clicks). Thankfully I didn't try to get three clicks out of it.
