replacing car emblems

*Not for my 86, hence why I'm posting it in the off-topics

I took my mazda's emblems off to paint and now I'm wondering how to put them back on. It sounds like a no-brainer but I'd rather get the 0.02 from someone that's already done this before. 3M tape? Caulk? Glue? Horror stories?

Get new emblems; they come with adhesive already attached and aren't deformed from removal.

That's the way. Pre-spaced and pre-taped.

We've tried everything over the years, nothing comes out as good as a fresh set.

Did it on my old old car with 3M double sided tape. Held up fine including through the winter. Trick is getting it all on straight. (can use painters tape for alignment)

fortunately they have tabs so they will go in the same way. I was wondering about double sides 3M tape and just cutting away any that showed from the profile but originally they didn't have tape so the tape may create an unwanted stacked tolerance issue

Sounds like a lot of hassle, go for the de-badged look.. if you ever sell, it becomes someone else's issue..

Sounds like going debadged isn't an option without metalwork. (way more hassle obv)

3M has a number of different double sided tapes available of various thicknesses and I don't think they're the only reliable brand either. Double sided tape has 2 major advantages: you can adhere the tape to the badge and trim it prior to installing it (super clean installation with no extra visible adhesive and very easy to do) and if the one you use is too thick or has other problems then it's easy enough to remove and do-over with very little cost.
