I guess it depends on what kind of "fun" you're going for. For a street car, the Ford ST and Mazda3turbo's are hard to beat for a brand new car and very space friendly. Hitting boost always puts a smile on anybody's face. But they aren't in the same league as the 86 when talking performance and sports cars. Not even close.

Cross shopping between the two is like going fine dining compared to fast food.

I own both a '13 BRZ Limited and a '14 Fiesta ST2.

The Fiesta is my new daily driver, with bike and surf board racks, a hatch for camping and scuba gear when I need it. It's narrow and tall compared to the BRZ and that makes it pretty ideal for zipping around downtown San Francisco.

Getting back into my BRZ feels amazing. The car is low, solid, extremely precise and the power is so predictable. It's prepped for the track and I'll be able to keep building it up that way.

They're similar in power, completely different in character. The Fiesta is a much cheaper car, especially noticeable in the interior.

Fun x2 !

I personally would never consider buying that Ford until they bring the two door model to north America. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure the four door is more practical. But I'm a looks guy. Comparison was over before it started for me.

Both are amazing cars, but different cars. I'll be posting a review of the Fiesta ST this weekend. I get to drive it while my car is at the dealer getting the TSBs done

I looked at a Fiesta ST because I'd heard nothing but good things about it. I went to a dealer to look at one and I didn't have much of an emotional connection to it. I just couldn't imagine myself driving one everyday. It was cheaper, more powerful, and more practical and it may have been just as good a car as the FR-S but for me there was no contest and I got the FR-S instead.

I agree 10000000%. If they brought a two door, I may be on the Fiesta ST forums right now.

I actually put money down on an orange Fiesta ST which was going to be 'shipped' to a local dealer and it just didn't show up for a few weeks. I literally went down to the Toyota dealer, and told them I am going to buy the FR-S over there, give me your best price. I left and a few phone calls later the FR-S was mine. Everyday I walk out to my car, I am so happy I bought the FR-S it just looks amazing.

I love the people who say you can't cross shop these two cars, yes, you can. The price point and performance factors are there to make them comparable. I drove the two cars back to back one saturday a few months ago. Both are great cars, for me the BRZ won out for the following reasons:
The BRZ seats are more comfortable than the Recaros in the Ford, the interior was a nicer place to sit, the shifter was much more precise feeling and a lot shorter throw, RWD with better handling dynamics! The twins don't look like an angry carp.

The fiesta is more practical as an every day car but I don't care my wife can have a practical car.

You can cross shop a miata and mazdaspeed3 too. Doesn't mean that makes any sense. The ford hatches are better cross shopped with the wrx or something. There is nothing in the ford stable that's in the same category as the twins.... You either want a sports car or a practical fun car. Pretty radically different things.

I've been having a hard time trying to decide between getting a Pomeranian or Lippizaner stallion. Maybe I'll start a thread...

I love the idea of this car, but when I sit in it, the high ride height, the acres of plastic on the top the dashboard, the ridiculously oblique and huge windscreen, the minivan view forward (no car bits in sight) - no thanks.

I bought the car as my daily driver so both seemed like good options at around $25k new. If you're into driving I think you have to give either car a shot at $25k and pick what you like better. Yes, I probably wanted a sports car from the beginning (e46 M3 if I'm honest) but I had to try the fiesta st to see if it was as good as everyone was saying. Ultimately, the BRZ was better and closer to what I really wanted in my car. I wanted something that was RWD that I could easily daily drive and take to the track occasionally to give my e30 a break.

Recently I have sat and driven both the FR-S/BR-Z and the Fiesta ST. I personally found the Fiesta ST to be more fun to drive because of it's TURBO engine. The feeling of torque when you get pressed into the recaro seats is definitely unique compared to the lackluster FR-S Boxer engine.

Take s few turns in each car and you'll understand which one is the sports car.
