First auto cross

I've never auto crossed before and I want to do it for the 86 expo down in va beach. What do I need to auto cross, I haven't found a thread for it. A cheap helmet and numbers? I kno nothing about auto cross other than the videos I've seen. Thanks in advance.

Its not looked upon kindly to run over cones, but no you won't be kicked out unless you kill ALOT of cones. Not to sound like an ass, but if you cant drive with traction control turned off, you might not want to go straight into an autocross expo. Even with traction control off you these cars dont 'want' to get sideways unless you want them to. Just aim and turn and you'll be fine.

Turn all traction control off!!! I did my first autocross a month ago, glad I turned everything off. It was a great learning experience. Don't drive beyond what you're comfortable doing. Besides helmet, just painter's tape for numbers. I'm running 100% stock and loving it. Learning my car and not doing any mods for the rest of the year

There is an entire sub-forum for this...

I would recommend checking out the C Street and STX threads to see into which class you fall. Both of those threads are filled with all of the information you could possibly need for a first autoX event

If you want to try autocross earlier, come join the Capital Driving Club (CDC). Next autocross is this upcoming weekend in Winchester, and they have a couple more in July. There's always a few first-timers, and there's always a large group of FR-S's and BRZ's.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68127

CDC provides loaner helmets if you don't have your own, and numbers can be taped on using blue painter's tape. There's always someone around that has extra tape to use. So all you really need to bring is yourself and your car, and need to be ready to have fun!

You can drive the course with an instructor or ask that a more seasoned autocross driver ride with you. You can also ride as a passenger with others - at CDC everyone is very friendly. (CDC is my only autocross experience)

The car is quicker with traction control off, and it's easy to learn the car's limits with it off (especially with stock tires), but you can drive at first in sport mode if it makes you feel more comfortable. Speeds are fairly low - the courses at CDC are designed so that you never have to go beyond 2nd gear.

It's all about having fun and learning to become a better driver - at the last CDC autocross, a fellow twin owner's wife and mother came out and drove the family Prius on the course.

Not to derail but since this thread is already here, the 86expo autocross is going to use SCCA classing...? Seems kind of pointless given that we all have the same car. That's gonna be a massive crowd each of C stock, STX, and modified.

If it's your first autocross, don't worry about hitting cones. Worry about remembering and staying on the course. Check and see if they have a novice class as well. That would likely be your best bet. It would greatly benefit you to have someone ride along with you and to try and ride along with someone else that has some experience as well. Big thing is to have fun!

I doubt the 86 expo is going to be that formal, I'm just giving as much information as I can. It will likely be run fairly loose like any other local autocross competition and just for fun.

Lol yeah I just read your post more closely. Saw you were mentioning posts that were specific to those classes. DERP!

Empty trunk of all excess crap you don't need to take with you as you will have to remove anything loose in the car before you run. Floor mats, soda bottles, basically anything that can fly around inside the car or possibly penetrate the car from the trunk in the event of an accident which rarely happens. Look for a thread in the forums for the auto crossing. I know Areddi always puts up videos after his events.
