I've worked in the auto service/auto parts related industry for more than a decade all together. I also check multiple sources for list price and how much they sell before purchasing retail. I get part's for the 86 cheaper from Subaru than from Toyota. Talking about retail here.

How much the service department charges for parts is a whole 'nother story, but at my local toyota dealerships (service) they charge the actual list price, not some marked up "list price".

So maybe its possible if the wrong grease was used that water somehow made contact with the TOB and wiped some of that grease away? I know the car calls for a high temp waterproof grease. Also makes me wonder if I should just spray a bunch of grease under the clutch fork boot. I've seen a few posts here and there about that method.

I cant say what Toyota does. I can only say what GM does haha. Americans screw us the hardest. Oh and Service charges the labor, parts are set prices from Parts Dept.

Though when I say a large pool of water, I'm talking deep enough to reach the tranny. Unless you run your car with no undercovers or skidplate, I seriously wouldnt worry much about water accumulating. Possibly only moisture in the air would make contact, but that's hardly enough to cause problems.

Thanks to everyone on. This thread.... Just to add curiosity and/or clarity to this.... I just installed the trans bushing from whiteline and now TOB is getting worst ( occasional rattle on trans bell housing on idle among other clutch feel changes, ect) ... I already got a TOB from ACT, so i,ll baby it until i find opportunity to drop trans.

Thanks for the pics!!!!!

I just started looking this issue up. Today as I was getting ready to leave work, I blipped the throttle in neutral and got a knocking sound. Seriously reminded me of a engine that was low on oil. A pretty audible rattling/knocking. I've determined it is the TOB because the noise goes away with just the slightest press of the clutch pedal.

Car only has 15,100 miles. Granted, it has seen a couple track days, and some parking lot exhibition driving.

Anyone concur with this being the issue? It's either the TOB or something in the transmission. Only at low rpms with a quick stab of the throttle results in the rattle.

I'm not under the impression these are great 1000 miles a week cars. That is a lot of excessive miles though. I think if I were driving that, I'd go with a small SUV, automatic. I mentioned to scion that these cars had a throw out bearing issue and the service guy said, we'll cross that bridge when we get there lol. Okay but that bridge may cost me a fortune. I have after market extended warranty that reads about the same as a manufacturers extended warranty. I've got 46thou on my FRS and so far no problems, but minute I hear some strange noises down there, off to the dealership i go! If I end up having to pay for anything, it will all be upgraded after market stuff

But to be fair to the car, I don't think its just this car, its ALL cars of every manufacture, even the elites like Porsche. They ALL have problems

I've been having noise with my clutch for a few thousand now. When fully depressed almost sounds like springs compressing. Clutch will be fully depressed and another 1-2 seconds of spring compress noises. I'm starting to think either internal spring between clutch and firewall or pressure plate.

127k on stock transmission boosts confidence

My TOB is starting to make more noises. Now when I rev high (5000rpm) with the clutch depressed, it makes noise. The first few times I heard it, it sounded like someone was honking their horn at me. Just a faint honk noise. Now it is getting more frequent, and I am planning on getting a new clutch set soon to resolve this issue.

15000 miles and TOB already taking a shit.
