In addition to what has been said up above, I came out of an NC Miata into my 2013 FR-S. Yes, they do feel a bit different and it took me some getting used to.

I suggest you allow at least 1,000 miles for it to get good and broke in.

not sure about the newer cars due to gearing but on 2013s, 2nd gear will lug below 8mph

Ah, I'm usually at like 10-12 when I shift casual driving. Maybe 1200 wasn't right, more like 1500-1600 that I still hear the transmission.

I drive in really heavy traffic on the interstate every day and typically run 8 or so in 2nd. When the speed picks up I can use very light throttle until I reach about 2k and can then dip into the throttle like normal without hearing it. If get heavy on it it will make a bunch of racket for a second until it reaches 2k. Then the traffic grinds to a halt and I’m engine braking back to 8mph again. Hahaha.

I’m in a 2013 so I have the old FD.

It’s normal for our strange car.

Edit: On the way into work this morning I paid more attention to how low I am running and I will run it as low as 1K in 4th and can still pull out of it without any racket as long as I am very light on the throttle. I'm in stop and go so it isn't like I'm trying to accelerate quickly. In normal casual driving without traffic I shift around 2800 and I can run heavy throttle this way without it making a bunch of noise.

IMO for a high revving NA 4 banger it has decent low end punch.

Yeah it’s really impressive at very low revs. I think that’s why the dip is so aggravating. Typically 4 cylinders are dead until 4K+ but ours is unusual that it’s strong from 1500 to about 2800 and then falls off until about 4700. If it wasn’t so strong down low it probably wouldn’t stand out so much. With the low end power and the super short gearing it’s really great for casual daily driving. But if you want to get on it at all you have to go balls to the wall. No real in between.

I’ve noticed rev hang around 5k after crossing the finish line during autocross. Full brake and full clutch and it stays up there until I am going less than 5 mph roughly. Anyone know why? It’s only ever done it when braking hard with the clutch pedal fully depressed.
