SCCA and Track days

I have been looking around for some information on track days in the Pennsylvania / New Jersey area. First a few formal notes...

SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) is a great organization and holds a lot of racing events all over the country. For our purposes, they have a good community in the Philadelphia area. Their website is worth checking out as well as membership.

There are two options:
SafeRacer First Gear Membership
Special discounted membership designed to help those age 24 and under get started. Delivers all the benefits of a regular membership, including your own copy of SportsCar®, at an exceptional value of only $45 per year

Individual Membership
Includes subscription to SportsCar® magazine (a $24 value), eligibility for all Club participation licenses, SCCA cloth insignia, SCCA car decal, insurance benefits, and discounts on Club merchandise and other products and services. The cost of your SCCA membership is comprised of $65 national dues plus Region dues ranging from $0 - $25

Getting involved with SCCA is invaluable to local racing, there are many events of all varieties, connections to be made, and it is a great way for people to get involved for the first time if this is their first real sports car (me.)

After obtaining membership, I plan to get my SCCA approved racing license. There are only five approved racing schools in the country, but the good news is there is one right in PA!

Here is the information on Bertil Roos Racing School

The Bertil Roos Racing School has been granted full licensing recommendation status for Regional and National S.C.C.A. Competition Licenses.
Our school is fully certified as an Authorized Competition Licensing School by the Club Racing Division of the Sports Car Club of America.

With this certification, our school can simplify and streamline the often complicated process of becoming a licensed racer. Our students can complete all of the requirements for licensing through our competition programs.
As a pioneer in the racing industry, we have been training students in the art of motor racing for over a quarter of a century. Our graduates can be found at every level of racing, from the hobbyist to the top levels of professional racing.

One of only five schools to be awarded this certification, our 2-Day Road Racing Competition School, resulting in fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain your S.C.C.A. license (pending approval of recommendation by the Chief Instructor), can be taken at the following four locations: Pocono International Raceway, Virginia International Raceway, Roebling Road Raceway, Beaverun Motorsports Complex, and NJ Motorsports Park.

This seems to be the best option for me as well many people in the area. It seems like a lot, but it will be an invaluable experience and for us car guys, a lot of fun. This will be an awesome way to get some experience behind the wheel in a racing situation, learn some skills, and be overall a safer driver.

After getting the membership and racing license, many more events are open and will be a lot less intimidating.

please feel free to post any info, feed back, or comments.

You should be able to do local event without having membership or a license. You just pay about $5-$10 more for the event if you are not a memeber.

An SCCA membership allows you to run with any host region, not just the one you select. Also, a Club Racing License is not necessary for any High Performance Driver Education (HDPE)day. There are many other clubs and businesses organizing track days, as well.

Yeah there is, I just looked into the SCCA because I work at a BMW high performance shop in Philadelphia and many customers (serious ones) seem to be lightly to heavily involved. Again, BMWCCA is a huge organization and has a ton of dedicated events and member... keep in mind brands like BMW and Porshe only make performance cars, except the odd x5, 7-series, etc. - which are actually still high performance cars for their respective classes. The ownership is highly geared to motorsport, whereas Toyota makes mostly eco-boxes and affordable sedans, the customers are not interested at all.

This is where we need to figure things out on an FR-S/BRZ level, the rest of the brand has hardly any sporting models- aside from STI's and older MR2, Supras.

Unless you plan to race your car wheel to wheel there is no need for a race license. I am the race director for NASA Northeast and we don't even allow folks to attempt to get their Lisc until they've completed at least 2-3 years of HPDE and moved up through the ranks.

If you are interested in a great HPDE Program check out http://NASANE.com and come out to one of our HPDE events.
