TRD Supercharger Build

Hello everyone.

I was really intrigued when I discovered the TRD Supercharger while sitting in a high school class two years ago, and now I can say I am the proud owner of one (of the extremely few). Me and a buddy installed it over the weekend using the directions @xwd provided, and it was a pretty easy process overall once the kinks were worked out with various useless OEM hoses. Just waiting on the tune from Zach @CounterSpaceGarage, as she runs but is not even remotely ready to drive with its previous tune. I have a build thread on my car and am updating this here first, but excited to see how this thing does! My FR-S is about to turn into a weekend/track/autocross car, so it will be well used and fit the entirety of TRD parts already included on my car.

Here is how it looks and a history lesson of it down below (trying to obtain and preserve as much info about it that I can):

Quick numbers/info:
Made for the race series
At most 4 are speculated to exist
Only one seen (that I know of) since 2014
Deletes A/C (got rid of washer fluid reservoir and one horn to mount water pump)
76mm Tundra throttle body (says 'belongs to Ken Stout' where the intake covers)
Tuned plenum
Larger twin AWIC
Supercharger is driven off of a separate belt than rest of the serpentine belt
TVS1320 core

For everyone that does not know, the purpose for this supercharger was to give the Ken Stout Racing team an adequate power increase for the GTS class in the Pirelli World Challenge series. As of now I only know their team to have purchased/used the kits, but have heard speculation another team has. This needed to be done with a "off the shelf" part and not a aftermarket part, so this is where TRD and Magnuson teamed up to make this supercharger as TRD is a OEM+ company. Lots of speculation on here for it to be emissions legal or for a separate emissions legal kit, but that was not the case. Was officially "offered" on March 1st 2013 with the part number of PTR29-00086, which were offered for $26,000 each with a minimum quantity of two per order (see picture below). The wording they used made it seem like they already produced the ones they needed and were not 'guaranteeing' they would supply them (aka stopped making them before anyone could buy them, then with the price and quantity no one could if they wanted to). Included in that $26,000 was the blower, AC delete/SC tensioner bracket, and a few pulleys. No wiring, no coolant lines, not even directions.

The KSR team raced in 2013 and 2014, but did not finish well due to reliability issues with the car as a whole, most likely due to it being an entirely new chassis with various kinks in different systems and such (like how the valve springs were an issue for some 2013 cars). They raced most of the 2013 season and around half of the 2014 season, then they disappeared as a whole. As mentioned above, it is speculated that 4 'production' units were made (not including prototypes), but my info shows it may be less than that. If we were to use serial numbers of one through four, we can say the one i received is 3. 1 would be the unit on the KSR car. 2 could possibly be one used on a spare engine in case of an issue leading up to a race, but who knows. 4 I would have never seen anything about unless there was another spare engine. All in all, one for sure used, one for sure was an extra, and the other two are unknown to me, and no other unit besides mine I have found or seen since the KSR team stopped in 2014. Either way, 1 of 2 or 1 of 4 is still pretty cool.

UPDATE 1/8/2024: I have gotten into contact with Ken Stout and the guys at Magnusson, and between the two of them they were able to fill in a lot of holes. Here are the updates on new and clarified info:

4 were made in total for the KSR team. There were 5 different supercharger pulleys available (100mm, 95mm, 90mm, 85mm, and 80mm), as well as 3 crankshaft sizes (5.5" for low boost, 6" for normal boost, 6.5" to "set the FR-S to kill mode"). The pulleys were there for tuning the boost numbers. The association between TRD and Magnusson was that Magnusson would do a vast majority of the work on the design of it while TRD would test it, help them with certain choices needed, and fund it besides needing the TRD name on it for the 'homologation' standards. The team was contracted to use a specific tuning company and they used specific fuel injectors. The injectors were bad, and the tuners were just as bad, and because of this they had a ton of reliability issues with the 2013 season. Near the end and obviously no change from the tuners, they went a different route with a tuner who used Bosch injectors, and just like that the car was reliable and finished well. Unfortunately it was the end of the season at this point and they already started to prepare for a turbo EJ that they ditched the FA.

That is all the info I have as of now, if anyone has any other info please let me know!

-Bergy

Awesome write up. I remember a few years back someone one here was selling one. The no ac part is why I would look elsewhere but it does look nice in the engine bay, like it belongs there.

Yeah, I had to do my research to figure out who @xwd was as he was not here on the forums, but I found him and we made it work in the end. I do not mind the no A/C, as its not super hot up here but I will definitely miss it at times, but as i am looking at getting a Corvair for a daily it will be alright!

Previous owner made 347whp on E70 and 95mm pulley (similar setup as i retain injectors and intake as him, and we both had Ace 350 headers). Smallest pulley included is 80mm, so E85 and 80mm could get some great numbers. I am sticking to that 350ish whp for now.

Saw this on facebook yesterday. Pretty awesome looking supercharger. It does look like it belongs there.

When they came out, you *had* to buy two with all the accoutrements or no sale.
Kind of squeezed all the fun out of things for the official TRD kit(s).

Will the Corvair have A/C? No matter though. Turbo is enough.

All the "26k, have to buy 2" was all to make the average joe not want to buy it because this was developed only for race cars. It did not meet emission standards, the tuning would have been too complex for a road car, and the FA20 already had enough reliability issues with how careless owners are. Toyota would have lost a ton of money if they had made this for a production car, pretty close to that 26k, and even then their profit margins would be small. This was all to make it an 'off the shelf part' in order to be legal for the race series. In the end it was like Toyota was making a race engine for the race series and the only way to buy the engine internals from that engine was to buy the car. It would not have worked out for anyone by the end of the day.

Only 2% of Corvairs came with factory A/C, but there are kits to add it...but this is not the Corvair forum and I am a bit out from that plan so far.
