Headers without tune?

Hey guys.... so I got my headers one year ago and since then I've had some financial priority changes...

My question is: if I put the headers on without a tune for 4-5 months, will I be causing engine damage? I've read in the forums that it'll mess with your AFR and is not good, however every single post seems to conflict with the other.

It's really not a good idea. You're also not really going to see any gains if you just put it on without a tune.

Just wait until you can afford it. That's like buying new shoes when you're waiting to get out of a wheelchair

OR buy a Tactrix cable and use OFT maps for your call ID/headers.
In every case what you should do is disable P0420 code and if possible scale accordingly your MAF!

I've been running a knocked out cat with a 2017 header for a while now, no issues.

As for codes, I used a 90° minicat, no codes at all.

Playing around with NA isn't as critical as a boosted application.

I will not however mod anything on a boosted vehicle without a tune.

Hell, I've run full exhausts and intakes on some of my new NA cars without tunes, never once had a issue.

I will get a tune for the 86 eventually, just need a couple of days free as my tuner will need the car for at least 2 days to do his thing.

Like others have said, it's not a good idea to run headers without telling the comp what to do with it and can cause poor performance and even damage. Get yourself an OFT 2.0 from speedfactory for $500. Comes with preloaded tunes for most mods.

As others have said your ecu is smart enough to adjust just not gonna get really any gains... Grab a used oft tablet on the forums. May I ask what brand of header?

Assuming it's a catless header- There's ways of getting rid of the P0420, but you'll get 0 gains, so what's the point? Wait until you can get an OFT or some other catless tune.

If the header is catted, yeah throw it on.

USE NEW GASKETS WHEN YOU MOUNT THE NEW HEADER- overpipe gasket too.

Headers going to tune

Just wondering if i get headers and install them, will i be causing damage if i drive without tuning first. It would be driving to my local tuner about 45 minutes away as soon as their installed.

The car already has a header so the change isn't big enough to worry about. You are safe to drive forever without a tune but you would never get the benefits of the changed header.
