No, neither company has "confirmed" any such thing. Some websites have taken statements from various people and claimed that they meant there would be a 2nd gen but there is not one single official statement from either company what the actual future of the platform is. Hell, we don't even know officially what the 2018 86 models will be at this point.

ok admittedly confirmed is too strong, but going off http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars...-in-the-works/ and knowing historically toyota will not abandon a model without multiple gens i thought this was a safe bet.

The future is self-driving electric cars. People, like that angry guy pointing a gun, will not be allowed driving on public roads.

Don't take it personally. I wasn't criticizing you. I was taking the opportunity to ridicule the prop car from some movie even Roger Corman turned down.

Please read the following in a conversational tone not as an attack or with any form of malice!

Meh. A website quoting another website is hardly a reliable source.
Many (most?) of the Toyota multiple gens took some really great cars and turned them into crap. If they are indeed planning a major change for the model it is very probable that the result will not be of much interest to the people that bought it for what it already is. Just hope they don't decide they want to up the production/sales numbers because that would mean building it for the widest possible appeal and will end it as we know it. We have already seen them tame down the suspension (I know some feel it is better but it IS tamed down) and up the quasi luxury components (when the car first came out they made a big deal the steering wheel was bare) so what direction does that point in for a successor?

Love the design, but hate what the car actually is. I'd go and buy another low milage FRS / BRZ / 86 before I spend money on these in a handful of years.

It looks like a "futuristic" car from a low budget 80s sci-fi movie, probably starring Matthew Modine and Marc Singer. If that's "the future" of this platform, I want no part of it. Realistically (and thankfully) I seriously doubt that it will ever see production.
@Guff, can you just merge the two threads?

was I coming across as being salty? regardless, it is all relative. perhaps you consider the Celica going from a rwd platform to 4wd and then finally to fwd to be one of the great cars turned into crap but to be fair toyota played their cards as best as they could. we could go on all day with what sort of direction toyota should have taken, but I guess their bank account does the talking. it will be very interesting to see which sort of direction they take the 86. think it will be much like the 1st to 2nd gen mr2, incremental changes without adjusting the whole formula.

No I just wanted to make sure I wasn't.
100% agree we could guess all day with why they do what but we can read through the business plan. They already know what is next but are very good at guarding their secrets.

Notice he strategically took the picture so we could not see the rear bumper.
