Interesting article on Motortrend's long-term BRZ in the August 2013 issue.

" Over the past few months the BRZ had been making an irritating noise, most noticeable at idle with the windows down... the noise was a continuous small squeaking or chirping- a cricket held up to a microphone."

" After describing the noise, the manager hesitated only for a second before saying, " it's the fuel pump.""

^^ Good. Maybe this will help force the issue and get a true fix. Now we just need the DI seals on the Motortrend car to fail

Why can't there be an electronic HPFP!?!

Electronic? The pump still needs to physically move fuel - electronics don't apply.

I just did a 350 mile round trip with no crickets! Before we left I ran my 93 tank to as low as I could and filled up with 91 Ethanol Free and almost immediately the crickets were gone. I couldn't believe my ears! The ethanol free gas is the only way to go. Luckily they are plentiful around Madison, WI.

This website has a pretty comprehensive list if anyone wants to check out their area.

Most of these are not in major cities is the problem. I'd gladly fill up with ethanol free gas if it wasn't 30 miles away. The ethanol causes that lubrication issue with the pump which makes it chirp like that. I've noticed the Chevron by where I live has the lowest mix of ethanol compared to the Shell 93 octane which makes me chirp like hell. I still get the chirp with Chevron, but not at idle... just slightly above it. Kind of a trial and error with gas stations but it could change the next time the station gets fuel.

I had the green dot HPFP installed, but the crickets came back after few tanks. I switched back to ethanol free, and no more crickets.

I saw this too. Thanks for sharing it. I hope it puts more awareness on the undesired crickets sound and helps bring about a solution.

When you bought the car new. In the owner manual there is a card to report complaints and problems about your car. Fill it out and send it in. This way by passing your local dealer and getting in to area mangers and corporate hands. More noise we make the sooner they will really fix the problem. And if you can, take the car in as many times as you can and complaint about the same problem. In fact bring up any and all problems, make sure it is documented and get and keep copy's of everything.

I've read that adding a cap full of 2 stroke synthetic oil per tank of gas is good for HPFP's.

My old BMW 135i had HPFP issues and I read there someone suggesting that adding a cap full of 2 stroke oil per tank of gas would help keep the HPFP from going bad (at least on the 135).

If the chirping on our cars is lubrication related, maybe this might help?

I posted this same info on another chirping thread, and someone said it might affect the octane rating, not sure about this.

1350 miles got the chirps. Went to dealer and they swapped the fuel pump with no hassle. Will see if it comes back. 91 octane same brand since new

Had this replaced on mine around 7,000 miles. I'm now over 8,000 and they are back. I called Scion to issue a complaint. The "local" dealer (45 min drive) asked me to come in next Friday to let him hear it. Ok, you guys heard it once and replaced the parts, I had to make 2 trips for that, I'm not doing it again. I should hear back within 24 hours from a specialist.
Have we confirmed that Toyota is just using the same Parts as before?

Any word on whether Toyota has extended this fix to the 2015 models? I see that they have service bulletins on 2013 and 2014 models.

I tried the suggestion of using Chevron premium and it seems to have greatly reduced the volume of the chirping or at times eliminating it altogether. I plan to switch back to Shell after this tankful is gone and see if the chirping returns.
