If it's a problem, masking won't help. It's not the smell itself but the chemicals. Also, people with sensitivities often find synthetic freshener issues to be just as bad... I know I do as often as not.

My experience is specifically hotels and not smoking rooms where someone smoked, and they tried to cover it up. Double whammy for me on allergies; last time that happened and they refused to put me in a different room I ended up with no voice and a cough that wouldn't quit for weeks...

Other BRZ new car smells e.g. the interior weren't as unusual (as that engine bay burning smell), just fairly typical new car chemical odors; the interior still smells (new, the same, etc.) after several weeks and several hundred miles.

When I bought my BRZ the dealer warned me to expect something like that due to the way the cars are prepared to be shipped overseas, with a coating of oil on some parts to protect the engine from corrosion during the transit that will burn off in that first 100 miles or so of driving.

I’ve had mine for over 1 year now I keep it ultra clean and I still get the new car smell. Never had a problem with the smell. You keep some baking soda boxes in there use the ones they make with the screen on the side for the refrigerators. You can also use cleaning products or ozone air neutralizers.

Mine went away after a few years. But came back in a better fashion when I installed 100% full leather interior. Mmmmmmmm. Leather.

Leather seats or a FULL interior? I've been thinking about doing some panels in leather.

I just got front and rear leather seats. Though the kit is 100% leather, not just the face of the seats. I also custom wrapped the rear deck to match.


This company sells the door panel parts, along with all the other parts that would make a FULL interior.

So, I did not replace EVERYTHING, yet... But the Pecca Leather kit set me back $1100, which was all of my automotive "play" fund at the time.
