No, they are not.
I would say as close as it gets, lineage wise, is that the Twins, (BRZ, FRS, GT86,) are the spiritual successor to the AE86, which I would consider a brother/sister car to the 85 Celicas, (the ones with RWD, still had the 22RE so it was EFI.) I had a 3rd, and 3 4th gen Celicas. They are great cars, and part of why I fell in love with older Toyotas but they are very different.
