Finally got around to finishing and installing some custom heatsinks for one of my Gustard H10 headphone amps:

Just powering it on to listen now since enough time has passed for the thermal epoxy to have cured. Will do it for my second Gustard H10 tomorrow.

Ceramic heatsinks?

BTW to me trying different cables provide a form of tone control and it's real.

I would like to know as well... but don't feel like buying a thermal probe/non-contact thermal reader. I just know those little transistors were like touching a hot plate if you leave the tip of your finger on them for more than a split second. Anything reasonable I can do transfer heat away from them makes me feel much better. Custom heat sinks made from 1mm copper heat sink shims are easy and reasonable...

And the more I think about it, I'm going to go back and fill in the gap/make a fillet between the bent tab pieces and largest side of the copper shims with the thermal epoxy to help with direct heat transfer to that larger surface side from the top of the transistors... more efficiency.

The ones I added a while back to the larger power transistors on the large black factory heat sink are low profile Versarien LPH0001 cupric foam heat sinks:

Oh wow, that sounds like they run quite hot. I wonder why they aren't passively cooled from the factory.

I have a cheap infrared thermometer and it's really useful!

Question for everyone.
I just ordered the philips shp9500s h'phones. It is opened back. Is there a way to make it keep the sound in and keep noise out? Ear pads mod possibly?
thanks.

And awesome stuff this topic.

Uh... don't get open back if you want that. Seriously.

Yes there are ways. But you lose the reason you buy such a setup (or rather, you lose the particular quality of sound that makes it worth buying) - assuming it's worth keeping.

I don't have experience with this particular setup, but... if you really want good noise control and sound quality, consider in-ear monitors. Properly sized and with foam tips, both comfort and sound are amazing.

Not really if you care about its sound quality (and it is very good sound quality for a $40-$50 can.) Would be best to get a closed back or IEM within your price range if you want more isolation. That said, the SHP9500 don't leak as bad as some other open phones do - nowhere near the level of the Monolith M1060 which sounds the same loudness from both grille and pad side, can use them as portable speakers too!

Pads are not too difficult to do on the SHP9500 - I fully recommend the Shure 1840 pads and making a custom attenuator which is placed inside the ear opening to bring back the bass otherwise lost with the pad swap. The stock pads are kind of shallow and pressed my ears into the driver cover enough to be annoying, the Shure 1840 pads provide just enough extra thickness to keep my ears off the driver cover. Excellent low cost all around headphone and I use mine when surfing YouTube, browsing through bandcamp on my tablet, or gaming on X-box one (though for gaming I'm really more inclined to use the HD700s.)

Closed back and IEMs would be fine but could become a safety issue while crossing the road, etc. as you also wouldn't be able to hear your surroundings very well obviously.

The problem of sound leakage was solved by the Japanese over 25 years ago (i.e. Sony slient cap with their open end earphones) so basically we are kind of backwards in 2018.

Those should serve you well, I've personally heard the ATH-M50X and it isolated well. Everyone says the 40 is better than the 50 for sound quality, the 50 was kind of muddy in the bass - the 40 is supposed to be better.

Just need to change the connector from 6.3mm standard to 3.5mm mini plug. Sounds nothing like the muddy North American variant.

Nice! But why change connector instead of using an adapter - only plan on portable use for them?
