Just put mine up on jack stands and swapped it along with the motor oil for the first time last night ~3700 miles.

Went with the Pentosin MTF2. OMG what a difference. 2nd gear cold shifts before felt like the equivalent of biting down on something hard and breaking a tooth.

Now, the shift when cold feels "notchy" in comparison to what it does warmed up, but it doesn't feel "wrong". Basically, you get a little more feedback through the gate, but nothing that would lead you to believe that something is wrong. All other shifts remain good and if anything have overall improved.

The difference is soo good, that even if someone said, "hey buddy, due to this fluid change, you just signed up for 2k of maintenance every 50k miles to replace something, I'd be down with it.

Living in the northeast, this fluid has totally changed the car for me.

Has this issue been solved yet with 2nd gear when cold? Im thinking about purchasing but this is the only thing stopping me. Has it been fixed in 2015 model?

liquid honey, ran it in my speed 3 with great success, not sure if its good for the 86.

I figured i should post my experience with transmission oils.

at 3500 miles i replaced the factory fluid with motul gear 300. the amount of metal shavings on the plugs were laughable. Transmission shifting improved dramatically in cold to the point i could actually get into second gear when leaving my street.

at 30k miles i let subaru put in factory fluid and i regretted that mistake the very next day. i could not get into second gear when cold, and even when fully warmed up was locked out of 4th on a 5-4 downshift and 5th was very stubborn on a 4-5 shift or 6-5 downshift. So after a week of cursing at my transmission and an extra visit to subaru to have them tell me everything is cool I went back to motul 300 and everything in my drivers seat world is perfect again.

My stock fluid shifts just fine and I'm afraid to go with Motul for the refill. I believe the 2nd gear hard cold is a safeguard intentionally done so I don't force it I wait till it lets me. I can't find the stock MG Special 2 or LX diff fluids online. All I see id 5 gallon pails from japan. Do the dealers have it now?

if you're having success with the stock fluid then I say stick with it. I really miss how notchy gears were with stock fluid, really made shifting more eventful whether good or bad. with Motul the shifter is still kind of notchy, but it goes through gears more quickly, it can be vague sometimes

Anyone knows where to get this pentosin MTF2 in Germany?
At the online shop in germany the don't sell it? http://pentosin-shop.de/
Or somewhere in Europe maybe.

I have a toyota pickup 1991 with brass synchros, with the no.2 gear problem as many have here.

Just found an alternative product from Castrol with same viscosity more or less:

Castrol B75W

Anyone tried it?

So I dont think this thread is still alive but im going to try anyway.

I am seriously thinking of putting the MTF-2 in my manual FRS with 41k miles.
I live in Miami so I do not have any cold start issues but my issue is that my third gear feels VERY crunchy, its almost hurts me, at times when engine is at operating temps.

Would the Pentosin MTL-2 assist in fixing this?

Nothing wrong with reviving it. Welcome to the forum.

Has third always felt crunchy, or did this develop over time?

Google the codes and read up on what others here have done. If it's not clear then start a thread with your questions. This is a known issue. You'll get much more respect if you show that you've put some energy into learning as you go.

If not 100% stock, what exactly has been changed?

What else do you know about the car's history?
