I was planning on chiming in here again, as I've made some discoveries regarding my issue in the last 6 months. It turns out, I have two noises that are similar, and sometimes happen independently, sometimes concurrently. There is also intake inductance resonance around 4000 rpm which makes the sources harder to identify.
One of the noises is in fact the clutch spring. The other noise is in the reverse lockout collar mechanism. The clutch spring noise is louder, more metallic, and definitely sounds like it is in front of you. This goes away with a light press of the clutch pedal. The reverse lockout noise isn't as loud and persistent. It sounds like it is coming from behind the center console, but after you identify it, it is definitely coming from the shifter area. Pulling up on the reverse lockout collar on the shifter changes the pitch to be much higher. My car has been tracked twice now since I posted last, and nothing blew up. My oil analyses don't indicate any serious problems. I have stopped worrying about this (finally). |

The reverse lockout noise is the cable rattling inside the shifter lever, which is hollow. I've considered stuffing some spongy shit in there. But meh.

At the end of driving all day yesterday after 9 months of silence my old friend the clutch spring decided to get chatty. Quick tap and it shut up.

Sorry to leave a comment on such an old thread but this is the exact problem/noise I've been experiencing for the last several months and the reason I joined this forum. rburrow87 did you, or anyone else for that matter, find out what the cause was? Mine has been getting progressively worse but not consistent enough to have a shop diagnose yet. I have a gut feeling it's related to the fuel system. When I flashed to the OFT e 85 tune for a few tanks the noise was present more often. I'm getting really frustrated and hoping to find out the cause, and if neccisary, a fix. I'd appreciate any input people might have.

Can you post up a decent clip of the sound? It can be a real challenge.

I'm going to guess it's the engine bottom cover. Try laying down and tapping on it from underneath. If not that, then pesky clutch spring.
