The Jetta didn’t get a following either because you will just slightly lose to a S2000 with $100k into a built SR20 motor.

Actually the Eclipses had a great following until the next gen came out and even the second movie couldn’t save them. But that green Eclipse has been copied probably more than any other car from the movie. It was even given more screen time in the cult teenage classic Sex Drive seen racing the GTO here:

There we go! I would have kicked Brian's ass with my Talon! In fact I could have kicked his ass with my FRS!!!!!

I think your dad and I would get along great! Pretty sure I have written that same last line about 5 times today alone!
Lol it's true. The biggest one I remember was the R34; magazines claimed hp numbers anywhere from lik 600-750hp.... when in reality, it was like 400hp. The supra was much quicker.

I spent most of the evening reading that site. Way more than the other one he was quoted in. It really helps with a long running debate I have had with an engineer here that insists there was only one of each car used in the film and all the driving is real not stunts or camera tricks (i.e.he believes the car floor pan really blew out during filming) and all the info on the internet that says otherwise is false.

It is great that your dad's car is one of the major reasons that the Supra name was resurrected!

Fun fact: depending on what version and year GTO it is their 0 to 60 could go as high as 8.5 seconds. This means that you would have somewhere around a 1 in 10 chance of winning a drag race against one in a stock Twin.

$20,000 Dealer Markup

A week back, without doing any research on this car, I went over to my local Toyota dealership to put money down for this car. Just on the name alone. Supra.

They wanted $5000 for the reservation, then the other bad news, markup.

The dealer wanted an extra $20,000. $55,000 for the Launch Edition was bad enough, but an Extra $20,000?!

For $75000 I could almost get three twins!

I got on this forum and learned about the car I was about to buy... a Zupra!
A BMW Z4 reskinned and sold under the Supra moniker.. how sad.

Now I’m looking into the 2019 Subaru BRZ. Better car, better price.

I recall this crap happened when the FRS/BRZ released as well and often happens to any highly anticipated release. Focus RS was another one I know this happened to. Within 6 months to a year from release, dealer markup disappeared in all cases.

The twins, whilst good, are far from being better than the Zupra.

The only issue, the one stopping me from really caring about it, is it a BMW, not a Toyota.

In saying that I have no issues with my 86 being a Subaru.

It's a crazy world, cats sleeping with dogs, stock markets not crashing.

TRD looks to be releasing a TRD GR Supra version or accessories in around 8 days from now. I wish I could read Japanese. I’m a TRD addict.

http://www.trdparts.jp/supra/performanceline.html

Sorry if this has been posted up already but didnt look through all 39 pages of thIs post.

Have to choose colour and trim for my GR Supra order with Toyota NZ in the next week. I’m still stuck on color as hardly any actual car pics so far.

Yeah, but I look more where and who built it, I acknowledge that Toyota did Q&A and were in on the design, as they did when Subaru was building the 86.

My point is I'm happy with the 86 being a mix of Toyota and Subaru because its a cheap car, hell, near on every part and panel on my 86 has Subaru on it, well apart from a few badges, there also has never been a 86, the twins are based of a few different cars.

But the Supra, to me the Supra is way more than your average bang for your buck twin.

It's a all Toyota GT car.

To me it's like if Nissan and BMW made the GTR, it would loose its soul.

Same same for that (edit Fiat spyder, fix it again tony, which is really a MX5, WTF, at least Fiat used their own engine and transmission.

I believe it's all about saving money, Toyota has just tweaked BMW parts and now call it Supra, the engine is tweaked BMW, the trans is BMW, the diff is BMW, suspension, yeap BMW.

Strangely enough I wholly approve of Toyota using Yamaha to design parts.

Well, that's my opinion of things, and you know what they say about opinions.

Hell, I'm sure the thing will be a weapon, just not one I would want though.

I am looking forward to see how the new powertrain handles when people start throwing big boost at it
