Swarm of bees by only offering an EL header and UEL no longer being able to fit on the car?

Why? They might be in the same factory but Toyota and Subaru have different agendas. Why would they sync upgrades together?

If you outright want a new car and don't care, buy the '17. But if you plan on modding the car for power, maybe wait and see which one responds better to tuning. If I was all about the numbers, I'd want to start with whichever car makes them easiest, wouldn't you?

People might go, "Oh, 5 extra hp/tq doesn't mean anything. They failed again." But what if that leads to an extra 20whp just because they changed the right stuff?

I dunno though. This seems like a unique way to look at it to me. I do that sometimes and people just shake their heads at me.

If they made 20 more WHP with a 5HP tweak there are a pile of tuners that have some explaining and refunding to do!

In the overall scheme of things you can have a more than a 5HP gain or loss depending on where you bought your fuel, how dirty your air filter is or even what the weather conditions outside are. In other words it means nothing to anybody other than the armchair number watchers.

I wonder if the torque dip is gone? It would also be nice if the paint quality improved.

Chevy, VW, Honda, are just several companies in recent years who have reduced weight in their cars while adding more tech (and usually increasing power).

I also am sad that as new things happen, facelifts, engine bay modifications, etc, the BRZ and FRS will grow farther apart. Hopefully it doesn't get so bad that people can only make aftermarket for BRZ or FRS.

Duuuuuude!
They are the same damn car with some minor cosmetic features. The 86 around the world have the exact same "upgrades" that the BRZs have and it was just Scions monospec that meant only the special editions had more goodies.
They will never "grow apart" and the base upgrades will always apply to both.

Oh god, you're right. It took 4 years, but I've turned into one of them. Careful, my next thought will be about AWD turbo models

The paint quality will only improve when the tech catches up to the environmental requirements imposed in 2012. There have been some huge strides in that tech in the last two years but I do not know if Subaru has made the changes yet. Toyota is just starting to convert their systems over though so I would think they will not be to far behind.

That said, in a couple years I may have to justify buying an 86 to my wife again

Speaking from experience (I actually had one, with issues), I can guarantee you that the issues that they had weren't from the part itself, in fact once mine was properly installed it was a beautiful thing with a 75 whp bump that I enjoyed driving daily.

Note that I said "properly installed." Mine, at the very least, was installed incorrectly which led to numerous serpentine belts being shredded (cause was that they slightly bent one of the mounting brackets at original install that threw an idler pulley out of alignment). I would wager that the majority of problems were caused by crappy installs. Sorry, Toyota, but asking techs who are more used to doing oil changes and basic routine maintenance to install FI with minimal training perhaps wasn't the best choice. Oh, and charging $4,000 for the setup.
Not sure why i was called out, i'm quite happy with my toyobaruscionmonogram86brzfrs

maybe the front end will grow on me over time but i'm not eager to get it any time soon
