Drove my BRZ today, crashed...

Actually happened on my way home Friday, car in front me got cut off, we both braked, I looked up to my rear view to make sure I wasn't going to get hit, looked down just as the guy in front of me hit his brakes harder, I did the same and my toe slipped off the pedal just before I came to stop. So while it was low speed, and his Equinox had only paints scuffs and scratches, his hard bumper hit just above mine pushing the top support bracket back along with everything attached to it. I will post more pics, still waiting to hear from the shop.

Well that sucks. No airbag deployment though so that is a good sign.

yeah, when my toe slipped off the pedal I pulled my head back as far as I could thinking "I am going to be so pissed..."

Because my hard bumper was below his the sensors completely dodged the impact, I am not sure if it would have even been hard enough to set them off had it been a direct hit.

They are 10mph impact sensors so it is possible you were under that speed. Like you said it was more the height of the other car that caused the issue. If you had hit flat on the damage would probably be far less. Always amazes me when you see how well the paint stands up to this sort of impact. A rock the size of a marble will chip to bare metal or plastic but a full impact results in some light scuffing and scratches.

I always have the same fear you have when braking hard. Its not can I stop its what about the jackass behind me that is way to close driving a 3/4 ton pickup. Can he stop?

Perfect example why you should not replace the hoods on these cars, that hood bent exactly as it was suppose to, to avoid it being pushed into the passenger compartment.

Glad you are ok, and I hope you get it back on the road soon

In all fairness a replaced good of aftermarket type would have probably just broke in half and not pushed in to the passenger compartment.

OP: sorry to see your car like that it is a shame, and hope the resolution is satisfactory!

thanks for the best wishes guys, the wait to hear from the shop is brutal. They had it all day yesterday and said they would have the estimate together by COB...crickets so far. Their appraiser said he thought it would be fixable, but that the damage was more extensive than it appeared (not sure what that means). Hood and bumper are obvious, the top support bracket and the factory airbox (had perrin tube, also destroyed) and MAF are smashed (somewhat concerned about plastic bits getting into the engine as it ran for ~15sec after the impact and the MAF housing was disintegrated). Both fenders are buckled and pushed back near the doors, the frame connectors that the fenders are bolted to also looked tweaked.
