AT - for the following reasons:

1) all of the drivers with a MT that i've talked to say in traffic it's a biatch to drive a MT. I mostly use this to commute so nice to relax in a sexy car after a long day of work.

2) I don't know how to drive a manual, no one can teach me

3) maintenance cost. it's cheaper to maintain AT.

4) AT drivers on this car just have more options. If it's heavy traffic then use D, if want to make some noise then manual mode.

5) paddle shifters looks sexy

Michael Schumacher pretty much drives an automatic while at work.

Wiki quote (Formula One Transmission): The driver initiates gear changes using paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel and electro-hydraulics perform the actual change as well as throttle control. Clutch control is also performed electro-hydraulically, except to and from a standstill, when the driver operates the clutch using a lever mounted on the back of the steering wheel.[

Yea i remember from a video that i watched about Formula1 racing technology, they use "automatic" because a human just can't compete with a computer shifting.

Nope. Those automated manuals shift quicker than any human could possibly dream of. Dual-clutch gearboxes you see in production cars come from this F1 technology.

Ask an actual race car driver at a top level of racing any time lately, the control and feel provided by a race car is paddles and electronic rev matching.
Whatever you need to tell yourself to justify driving an automatic sportscar..joking

The FRS is my first car, as I'm still in high school. I went with an MT so I could learn how to really drive. It seems like nowadays most kids stick with AT, which is cool, but there really is no fun in that.

I'm going to get a Brz soon and I am coming from an Audi A3 with dsg (dual clutch gearbox). I am going to get MT because I know the 86 is designed to have a manual gearbox , where the A3 is better with the dsg. + I know the auto won't be as good as the dsg that I am used to.

The 86 was also designed with the Auto in mind although many people in these forums would still associate getting a MT as somehow being more masculine. Coming from a fancy Audi DSG, I would be highly interested in your impressions of the 86 AT. The AT changes gears very responsively in Manual mode. I'd be curious as to your impressions if you ever get an opportunity to hop in a 86 AT. One advantage of a slush-box torque converter Auto found in the 86 is that it should be way more reliable than DSGs (at least that is what I've been led to believe).

AT or MT

Well after many years of manually shifting(Mk1 GTI, Jetta GLI, CBR 600 F3, ZXR, ZX9R) I went with the A/T & I love it.
It really came down to color and availability. The dealer had a firestorm M/T & an Asphalt A/T. After driving both I was really suprised at how the auto performed, & in my opinion asphalt looks ten times better than firestorm red!

I live in Bangkok, frequent gridlock and have driven an automatic all my life (not that I can't drive a manual). Also, I have read only good things about the A/T. Finally, the paddle shifters make me feel like a BOSS.

Try buying a manual Ferrari. You can't.

MT or AT

I own an AT, but im quite happy with it. Can the car drift with this tranny, it def can! I have done it. I Love manual transmissions, and I feel I am missing out, a little. I do not regret the gas mileage gain though! 34+ on the highway has given me something to hoot about! While at the same time I am able to still have lots of fun in my car! I will say this, in case any of you owners have discovered this after you bought the car, whether it is AT or MT, the 5th to 6th gear are weak! They are meant to save you fuel in the end. I traded my 2010 mazda 3 2.5 hatch for my FR-S, I loved the manual transmission in that car, torque in every gear and it was such a crisp shifter, I loved it! I was sold on the tranny alone! I am also 35 yrs old, and in the Army, and my ankles are prone to some stiffness and irritability. Not using that as an excuse but rather a means to measure what is best for me at my age. I would love to have the manual but I was better off with the AT in the end. I love the paddle shifters, it gives the impression that I am in a proffesional race car. So that is a plus to me. Down side, downshifting has some lag.. but once in gear, its game on! The car does fly, thats for sure! No complaints from me!
