Which problem parts should be replaced while engine is out of the car?

My engine developed a bad knock so it's coming out. Don't know if it's getting repaired or replaced with another oem engine yet but my question is are there known issues that should be addressed while the engine is out of the car? I know older Subaru engines had issues with head gaskets and water pumps, is that still and issue with the FA20? Any other recommendations on how to take advantage of the engine being out of the car?

Remove and thoroughly clean clutch fork, throwout bearing, and transmission front cover.

If there are signs of wear on the front cover, replace both it and the throwout bearing.

Reassemble, ensuring all pivoting and sliding joints are properly lubricated.

When I was in the same situation as you I put a light flywheel, heavier duty clutch and a header on while the motor was out. You could maybe do the rear cam plate as some people have had leaks there but I didn't bother. I don't believe there is any part easily replaced that is considered a weakness.

I'll look into the rear cam plate, even if it doesn't need replacing ma as well check it out. Probably throw in a new clutch kit too since it's there. Thanks

lots of other transmission parts can go in too, the mtec springs maybe stronger mounts if you are interested, etc.

All accounts except mine. I'm still not convinced, for the stock clutch at least, that the fork is too weak. I have personally experienced the TOB bind up against the snout (front cover). I'll continue to clean and lube the stock parts while waiting for some long term feedback on the Velox unit.

I'm not suggesting for the stock clutch that the oem fork is too weak but given the engine is already out I think it is a nice/easy mod and you know, because racecar*.



*I don't mean that literally but the Velox fork (and knife and spoon if they're available) is my list of things to do when the clutch needs replacing.

Anyone have the subaru part number for that transmission front cover (snout)? I might get it while I'm replacing the TOB and clutch fork anyways.
