Is this the normal amount of play for stock shifter?

Recently got my clutch replaced due to a failing TOB bearing and I was wondering if the play I have in my shifter is considered normal or not (both neutral and in-gear).

...or if my OCD bearing is starting to come loose.

I don't know if these cars have a bushing on the selector shaft on the transmission that attaches to the linkage, but on other cars (BMWs in my experience) they can wear out and cause epic slop side to side (like more than a half inch each way) and still shift properly.

Edit: this one. If it isn't a solid joint and they separated the trans, letting too much weight hang on the linkage before disconnecting it, that part can wear out.

I'd check the shifter plate first though, that's much easier.

........ stop looking for stuff to be wrong.

Ain't nutten wrong with your shifter (unless mine is lose too).

Heck, back-in-the-day, I had a floor board shift, 3 speed, in a 1937 Chevrolet, that 2nd gear would point to anywhere between the speedometer and the glove box ....... and it worked just fine ......

@Tcoat ....... what was that other disorder that some people confuse with OCD .... ??

I've wondered this myself and checked out a few 86/BRZs. Bottomline, it's normal.

And, I believe the WRX shifters have more play than this, yet they consider it normal as well.

@Brzerker @8RZ this amount of play is not be normal. No video on youtube I've seen from a vendor or tuner or other has had sloppy gearshifts like these.

@dhuang I have the same amount of play after my clutch replacement as well. Keep us posted if you find anything.

@Yoshoobaroo thanks so much for the tip

That's totally normal, relax and get used to it and before you know it you will be slamming through gears getting on the highway in no time flat, by the time you hit 80 you will have a smirk on your face.

Compared to my previous manual cars this one is slightly more tricky and less forgiving but better throw and less play. Drive a manual car from the 80s and you will see what play is.

Also don't jiggle the shifter in gear while its running, shift and take your hand off the stick until another gear change is needed. Do not rest your hand on the stick.
