Driveshafts have never been an issue with Subaru's, its probably the LAST thing on the list of all the drivetrain components that needs replacing.

Not so much a matter of failure, but of losing weight where it counts; rotational mass.
There are aluminum and carbon fiber driveshafts out there which should make a difference in performance.
They're ~$500 (aluminum) or ~$1,000 (carbon) and are a fairly straight forward install.

I know all about deivetrain weight loss.

I still wouldn't "upgrade" the driveshaft until upgrading everything else first.... Bushings, mounts, diff, flywheel/clutch, after going FI or full exhaust/intake/tune, etc.

STI upgraded the driveshaft w/o FI.

Exactly.
Especially for an N/A build, this really has a much larger effect than most would realize.

The tS drive shaft is not just lighter and stronger. It is one piece and a larger diameter.

What exactly the benefits of the increase in diameter and vehicle application is lost to me.

That's too bad, there's a lot of good info on that vid & vol 2 too. I would translate it... but don't have time right now.

Dangerous with that vid already out there, but I'm going to venture a guess...
All else being equal, less twist of the driveshaft giving better response and feel.

(How'd I do?)

Doesn't matter. Its still not a weak point until the rest is upgraded. It won't make the car any faster or more reliable when its stock.

Because STi just does things because it has no performance value whatsoever.
