I'd like to see what kind of fluid Aisin is putting into the Porsche 911 transmissions.

Great find thanks, seems crazy inexpensive for a new 6 speed. I guess it explains why there are so many issues with these, Subaru/Toyota got what they paid for.

overdue update: I've been in extensive contact with SOA over this. It got elevated from the first guy I talked to to some higher indeterminate level.

She told me that while they can't change what the work order says, they're amending the "record" to state what happened, my immense displeasure with the outcome, and gave me her phone number to call before I take it in for any additional repairs so I don't get boned again. It's not the exact answer I was hoping for, but it'll definitely do considering she's essentially told me they'd rather stand by their warranty (at least in my case) rather than the nameless asshat regional parts manager who hijacked the repair. I told her that person should be re-educated, transferred, or fired because she didn't have the slightest clue as to what she was talking about or how manual transmissions/redlines work. Not to mention, she essentially lied.

I'm still debating whether or not to lemon law that car, but really happy I'm not going to have problems with them covering the tranny in the future.

I opened my ticket on friday with soa and they called me back. I actually got the same girl that helped with my first lemoned frs.

She did confirm what the dealer told me and said that the 5th gear being difficult to downshift into and almost grinding is a known issue with no known repair yet. They said toyota would be contacting me or I can keep following up with the dealership.

Getting annoying.

What was the first one lemoned for? How hard was the process (at least in AZ)?

^ Holy shit!

So you only had the grind up in the higher gears or did you have the chunky 1-2-3 and 3-2 shifts?

Two separate Toyota dealerships verified the problems but wouldn't do anything to repair it. After many weeks, an FTS finally drove it and decided to just replace the tranny fluid, which just made the problem worse. Another FTS drove it a few weeks later and said that the synchroids are worn and that's what's causing the grinds. He said it doesn't affect the drivability or safety of the car, nor will it cause any failures, but they will replace it anyways. They would call me when the transmission has arrived and I can get it replaced, but the car is safe to drive in the meantime. The next morning the car had a catastrophic transmission/clutch failure at highway speeds. Let me rephrase this: With only 4,402 miles on the odometer, the FRS had such a severe transmission failure that it was left 100% undrivable and had to be towed off the freeway on a flatbed. 4,402 miles.

Drivers beware, get your cars fixed ASAP if you are experiencing these problems. They are in no way safe to drive.

I've attached a picture of my last clutch for reference. Specialists are saying this was almost certainly caused by the preexisting transmission problems.

If the transmission problems and clutch failure are linked, I think the FST has it backwards. A clutch that's coming apart that drags when fully declutched will definitely cause grinding gears.

I wonder how much more we're going to see this. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=50

That's what I was wondering as well. Is it actually the clutch causing all of the grinding issues that people are experiencing?

One of my biggest questions about the picture and the disc failure is why is only the center metal section of the clutch disc turning blue? The clutch material does not look burned, or does the pressure plate. Bluing usually caused by a lot of heat and the pressure plate really does not show signs of excessive heat. The picture of the failed one in the link is really blue and the disc has some signs of heat, but I'm not sure how an internal transmission problem can be causing this bluing to the disc center. Mysterious.......

It got worse and worse from there, to the point where it sounded as if I wasn't even applying the clutch and forcing it into gear. This is when they replaced the tranny fluid, only exacerbating the problem. After the fluid was changed, not only was the 6-5 downshift still grinding, but it started to develop more problems throughout the gears. The most prominent was the grind on the 3-4 upshift. Just like the 6-5 downshift, it started out very slight and got worse from there. As if this wasn't bad enough, in the early mornings, first gear could not be engaged without the transmission warmed up. I would literally have to roll down my hill in neutral and drop the car into second gear because it would not go into first. Mind you that I live in Southern California and it does NOT get very cold here, especially in the months of August-October, which is when I was having these problems.

Yikes...my 3-4 upshift has been a little grindy for a while. Recently reverse started getting very stiff and hard to get into it. Once I actually get it into reverse, I can freely move it to neutral and then back to reverse without issue. However, if I shift to neutral, take my foot off the clutch, then clutch again, it is stiff trying to get back into reverse.

Race shop I go to, the owner has his 1st and 2nd gear almost completely frozen like that and Toyota has been giving him the run around. Keep in mind, his car is bone stock and used as his commuter vehicle.

I'm almost wondering is the slave cylinder isn't providing enough travel to completely disengage the clutch. Even with my fx400 it's a stiff shift from neutral to first at a stop

Someone mentioned that the blue is the factory heat treatment.

The clutch material would 'burn' and would appear as such, both instances posted have clutch material that looks almost brand new (apart from being shredded), see below for a comparison:

Mine grinds into 4th unless I am VERY slow and deliberate with my shift (I have to wait for the engine to fall 2-3k RPM). Clutch pedal is at stock height and I'm on the stock clutch. However, I'd be curious as well.
