FRS on studded, upsized iPikes
Went with 215/50/17 Hannook ipikes instead of stock size 215/45 for the extra .42 inches ground clearance, and it fills the wells quite nice. It's .84 inches over total diameter - 3.4% over. Kept the TPMS out - will put them in the new summer wheels and mount the stock tires till they burn off. I think it looks badass. |

It does look pretty sweet for a winter setup. You will probably get snow before most of us. I am getting mine put on my stockers next week but probably won't mount them until just before the first snow (live in Missouri). Will leave my aftermarket wheels on until then. I had a 370Z with winters a couple years ago and that thing was a freaking snowmobile - I am sure this one will be even better.

That's nice man! I didn't thought to get a size up for 16" winter tires. I'll post when it's in "winter mode"

Nice setup. I am debating whether I want a dedicated snow tire set or if I want to try and get away with all seasons. My neighborhood is notoriously difficult to get out of when it is snowy.
FWD has spoiled me a bit. I've run summer tires in snowy weather without incident by using ample caution. Something tells me I won't be able to get away with that on the FR-S.

It's -3 C , so no snow but no noticable noise on the expressway. You can totally hear it at low speed, like driving on a bit of gravel. Obviously winter tires feel a bit "floaty" or mushy compared to harder summer, but the grip is great. I cannot wait for the snow/ice so I can kick the back around a bit.

My studded tires should be here in a couple of days. First time I've had studded winters, a little concerned about the noise but hopefully it won't be too bad. Wonder what winter in Alberta will bring this year, if it's like last year I'm worried the studs will go to waste!

Studded snow tires do grab better on ice but they are extremely noisey. Also, they reduce braking distant and decrease accleration. Just be aware of sudden braking and dont be use to your current braking distant.

After owning a 1989 240SX XE which had a very similar balance ratio as the FR-S & BRZ, I can tell you from experience with the 240 that after about 1/2 inch of snow, you are going nowhere (with stock tires)............believe me.
