No BRZ Pre-orders for 5-6 months

For those of you who might be interested in preordering a BRZ, I got some information today that pretty much confirmed what I had heard from the initial dealer I spoke with.

The update indicated that within the first 5-6 months, Subaru of America will ship cars based on allocation, and during this time there will be no pre-orders. This basically means that you can put your name on a list at a dealer in order to get on a waiting list and get "dibs" on the cars that are allocated and arrive to that dealer....but you won't (at least for now) be able to place a specific order for the exact color, trim, options that you want until some time later in the year. Additionally, the allocation will be based on the number of Impreza's each dealership sold in 2011. For the dealerships that sold a higher volume of Impreza's, they will get 1-2 BRZ's per month, and the lower volume dealers will get less, if any, until production picks up.

I guess the next logical question would be to research the dealers in your area and how many Imprezas they sold in 2011. Im not sure if there is a real easy way to gather that information???

Just thought I would pass along....

Meh, I have my money down at one dealer, and my name on a list with no money down at another. If what you're saying is true then I may just have to wait an extra month or two to get the trim I want, which may even be beneficial depending on my work situation in a couple months.

That seems like an odd way of doing it. Places where it is snowy sold a ton of Imprezas (CO, WA, ect.) but I doubt the BRZ will be as large of a seller there due to the RWD. Seems silly.

Very interesting, thanks for the info. Glad I am picking a popular color and trim level (WR Blue Limited). I don't think this will be too annoying considering there's really only 2 trim levels, it's not like a BMW with a million options.

Ya this is what my dealer told me as well. I put down a deposit so i get first dibs at my dealer. Im worried i wont be able to get the trim/color i want, but my dealer is large. 27th in country, and they expected 3-6.

Wait, you people are actually giving dealerships money now for a car with an unannounced price on top of the fact that you can't spec the car how you want or actually pre-order? I'm sure they'll gladly take it...

Just wait for the right one to come in. If they're getting 3-6, I'm sure one of them has to come close to what you want.

My (And Jeff's) dealer originally expected 4-6 as well. The regional rep corrected that and provided the info Jeff posted (although Jeff found another source with a bit more info).

I really wouldn't expect more than 2 per month.

I agree though, I'm worried too but at the same time I think this will be great. I'll see the colors and can wait unless I fall in love with one instead of preordering and if I don't like it having to drop off the list, etc. So I guess I'm 50/50 on this method.

Of course. We did so to secure a deal that's less than MSRP that many dealers in popular areas will be selling the car for, or even MSRP+markup like they did with STi's originally, etc.

And they just keep the check, I'm still getting interest on those funds sitting in my savings account.

Its a refundable deposit. Just holds your place in line. Plus the Fitzgerald dealership does pure pricing across the board. Flat price, no negotiating across all cars/brands. Generally, its below msrp.
