Front Upper Strut Mount Side Specific and Position?

2014 Scion FRS

Do the upper strut mounts belong to a particular side? Or are they side interchangeable? If belong to particular side how do I tell?

Also, is there a particular orientation of the upper strut mount?

Background: Had a shop install the SCCA SSC kit and not getting anywhere near the negative camber as everyone else. They got -1.34 degrees and everyone else is getting around -3 degrees, some getting more.

I know the SPC camber bolt is installed partially wrong, so I will switch that. It was installed with large tab in but arrow out. It should be installed large tab out and arrow pointing out. Not sure that one change will make -1.6 to -1.7 degrees difference, but it's a place to start.

So, I'm planning on pulling struts and make sure the upper strut mounts are correct. One note I saw was making sure the spring sat in the same dimple in the spring bumper.

I also think I saw something about aligning lobes of the spring perch and spring bumper. Is there anything else to align with the front suspension support sub-assembly?

Looking at the shop manual for 2013 Scion FRS doesn't indicate anything special. I'll have to buy the 2014 shop manual and double check that.

Any advice / info is appreciated.

Thanks.

The front strut mounts are not side specific.

The springs should sit in the spring seats in a certain way. There are a few guides on here. A shop shouldn't mess that up.

But I'm guessing this is an alignment problem with the camber bolts being installed incorrectly.

We're in MD as well, let us know if you want us to help set up your SSC car or reinstall anything.

Sounds like they may not have put the small bolt in the upper hole.

With the tabbed washer the other way, your camber adjustment is from zero to positive. The tab sticks out the same amount as the cam so with them pointed toward each other it's like you have a straight bolt.

Small, 14mm cammed bolts go in the lower hole. Larger, 16mm cammed bolts in the upper. Which hole and bolt you are using depends which way it should point.

Thanks guys.

SCCA SSC spec class requires SPC 81305 - 14MM EZ CAM X bolt in bottom hole and 14mm straight bolt in top hole.

Jamal, very interesting. I did not know the relationship between the tabs and the cam on the SPC adjustable bolt.

I feel like just changing the direction of the tab should do it. Though I might as well check to make sure the spring is in the seat correctly.

I guess now you have to ask, what even is your alignment place doing? They should know how camber bolts and these adjustments work.

Car is aligned!!! Front camber available is -3.1* without really trying. Just wish the original shop listened to me. Thanks for the help/info.

Is that -3.1 with lowering? Sounds a lot of camber out of one set of camberbolts and 14mm oem like crashbolt in upper hole.

Yes, it includes a set of Eibach lowering springs, an SPC camber bolt (+- 1.75*) and the 14mm oem in the upper hole.

The SSC Koni Yellows (and I believe all Koni Yellows for the 86 iirc) have both upper strut holes oversized not just one which gets you a few more tenths of a degree.

An OE strut would definitely yield less with those bolts.
