The configuration that you are looking (Limited, Manual, Performance Package) for is quite common. Most Limited BRZs that I found when I was shopping also included the PP (probably because it only adds about a grand to the price and improves the appearance and braking/handling performance of the car). The PP can only be had with a manual, so that takes care of that requirement. If you do drive to pick up the car I would NOT recommend putting the break-in miles on the engine on the interstate/hwy at a steady speed. You should vary the engine speed as often as possible during break-in, so backroads and some stop and go driving is best.

What I would do:

1. Test drive a local TRD 86 to make sure you actually like the damn thing. There's a chance they might not let you test drive it because "limited edition sports car... blah blah blah." Then just try to find a used brz with the options you want and drive that.

2. Get quotes from local Subie dealers and see if they compare to Truecar or whatever people are paying on the "price paid" thread. If so, order and wait a couple months for a group of highly trained Japanese cosplayers to assemble your finely tuned athletic machine.

3. If no local dealers want to play ball, find some good prices online and fly out to get it.

The GM of the original dealership accused me of drifting the car. I told him I drive it on tracks, but never abuse nor drift the car. There was no basis for his accusation. When I told him I did not drift it, he replied with "Yeah you do." When I denied it again, he said, "Yeah you do." Then he told me to leave and never come back. Classy guy. It was one of the worst service experience of my life.
That’s sad.. thankfully I’ll never have to deal with their service department since I only bought it there to do a nice road trip back home.

I ordered mine.

The local dealer told me "we don't get many of those". I ended up calling SoA and they sent me to a dealer that handles a ton of special orders. Totally painless, and 11 weeks later, I got my blueberry and even got to unwrap some of it.

Production has already switched to 2020s at the plant.

Similar, I dealt directly with SoA (great customer service) and they gave me VIN #s and dealer names for vehicles I wanted (color, spec, etc.) in transit or arriving soon at dealerships within the radius I requested. Was able to get exactly the specs (and deal) I wanted literally on the day it arrived off the truck untouched and with the shipping wrapping still on it.

My dealer asked for $500. I would expect somewhere in the $500 to $1000 range is normal.

The other day, I spent a couple hours with a 2017 86. It definitely confirmed that it's the right platform for me. The BRZ definitely has the better feature set, if you ask me. I just wish I could get a BRZ in Neptune Blue.

The driving experience was pretty much exactly what I expected (read: awesome). There was only one thing that was weird for me: The gearing was shorter than I expected. It's not a bad thing, but I'll have to get used to that.

Just order it. It is exactly the same as a dealer ordering their own car for inventory, just that they are ordering it for you instead. It does not cost any different. Its just that you need to wait for it. Thats how I got mine. It took like 4 months but I got it.
