That will also take the chrome off or at least hurt the finish. There isn't a way to reverse this modification without new headlights.

Here in AZ, we have a company called "Space Age Paint".

I had them pull the color code for my vehicle and create a gloss (Without Clearcoat) that matched the paint code (61k) of my car. @jeffsides helped me bake it at on of our tech days we did and I believe we painted 3 vehicle lights for $56 (Rounding up, $20/pair) and we still have some paint left. Probably enough for touch up, or one headlight. We applied 2 coats I believe.

I chose no clear coat because the headlights are in a sealed environment (If done correctly) and because it's the same paint as on the body of a vehicle (they specialize in auto paint) I wasn't worried about the temps.

As a side note, I had an HID bulb explode in the housing after paint (Faulty bulb, product replaced under warranty with compny) and the paint didn't flinch. So it's a solid way of going about it too.

You could always use a film rather than paint for the same effect. I used laminx and it worked great.

I don't think this would work. The laminx goes over the lens, we are painting the chrome. The whole idea of this is to get the look without hurting headlight output. Putting a tinted overlay hurts the output, and safety at night.

I have the darkest headlight film they offer (gun smoke) and It does affect output, but only by 12% according to their website. Personally, I can't tell the difference and I went this route because I like the added protection of the film. I've had this film on for about a month now and it hasn't hurt my nighttime driving at all, but to each his own.

If you want an option that doesn't block any light then this is not for you, but again, I couldn't tell the difference.
