Bah, tire garbage again, the RE050's on the Fiata aren't significantly faster than the Primacy, if anything hurt the 86 it was low end grunt on a high speed course, wrong gear and you're dead no matter how perfect your line is. Add in the Fiata's weight and it's faster than the 86 through every corner and pulls just as hard if not harder on exit. Being able to pull a few tenths of a g more won't reverse the deficit.

Every car has what tire they used listed by the way. Civic SI was on 240TW Goodyear Eagle F1's, not sure how good they actually are other than they never come up in street-able track tire discussions so I doubt they're that quick either, but with 235 summer tires and only carrying 150 lbs more than an 86 with some turbo grunt down low it's no wonder it's quick.

The Goodyear Eagle F1s Asymmetric 2s are a max performance summer tire and in the same league as the Ventus V12 and Pilot Sport 3s. They're definitely a step above what the Fiata and BRZ use. Off the top of my head, I think the Camaro SS uses a similar variant (F1 Supercar).

Do we know how dry the track was when the BRZ ran compared to the others? I know in the video the BRZ wipers are running. The 2017 BRZ beat the 2016 Miata ND Club time from 2015.....

3:19.7 to 3:20.8

In the article it stated that the 2013 BRZ ran a 3:18.7 or something like that. I can't imagine the PP reduces that time by much more in the dry.

Driving around VIR looks fun. Basically Full throttle the whole way. Car slides a bit, but as noted, this helps it carry speed out of the corner. Much approve.

Most configurations of VIR favor power. It's doubtful that the PP makes any difference to the BRZ's lap times. Ditto the 5hp boost. Different weather conditions (compared to years past) probably affect engine performance more than that.

Would the tS fare better...almost certainly, but probably entirely due to different tires.

Yep - tires make such a huge difference on lap times. For curiosity sake, I'd be interested to see them put every car on the same tires.

For example, we know that when the BRZ is fitted with RE050A tires (the OEM tires for the Fiat 124 Abarth), that has cut 2 seconds off its time on a 1:20 course in a prior test. That should *theoretically* cover the 2.8 second spread between the BRZ and 124 Abarth over a ~3:20 course like VIR Grand configuration.

The other thing I'd love to see is every car given a proper track alignment and track pads. Now that's getting out there in dreamland, but the only people who really care about laptimes are enthusiasts and realistically anyone who's going be tracking on a regular basis is going to get tires, pads and alignment at a minimum. Convenience aside, I'm not sure there's a point testing cars exactly as they come from the factory, other than for OEM track specials that already come with R comps, track pads and track alignment (or at least recommended specs).

But according to NASA the 2017 is worthy of a * addition to its classing....

I don't know about lap times, but I know I would probably have much more fun tracking a BRZ around VIR than any of the other 5 cars listed. Plus I would learn more as a driver in my opinion, compared to the other FWD and AWD variants . If those other 5 cars are faster it is not because they are dynamically superior in any real way(each have their merits). It would be due to any combination of power, tires, gear, etc.

So unless your choosing a car based on the ratio of dollars spent/vir lap times, then it doesn't really matter. I mean if that's the case then there are a lot of cars that would be left unpurchased in favor a $65K Gran Sport Corvette. Which is a heck of a car on the road and the track with my limited experience.

But people still buy BMWs, Mercs, Porsche, and even 458 Italias despite the fact that they cost more than the vette and have slower lap times.

A BRZ in stock form is not going to win a bunch(hell, if any) of races, but its a great starting point to build on if you so choose too. And, you will have fun doing it. There is more to a car than what can be shown with numbers, and since most of us use the aftermarket to augment our cars and each car has its own level of support and challenges....it makes the VIR lightning lap even more irrelevant, but still a fun read.

I still wouldn't pick an SI, WRX(owned 3), Mini, Fiat over a BRZ for my track toy. Unless we were on dirt, then the conversation changes

Nor would I. Not even close.

Not going to get into an argument over driving dynamics but Honda has built a really quick car for $25,000. Real simple formula for quicker times is torque and tires. I can't help but wonder how well the twins would sell if they had a little more of both available without ballooning the price into the 30's.

Well 2006, a heavy AF, "slow" 350Z with the WORST VQ iteration in a Z car..the VQ35DERU ( I think...300HP, 260TQ on old calcing systems)did it in 3.12....
