Engine Cooling options

Hello

I have been taking my car to the track and I have couple questions on engine cooling.

1. after 4 laps the car is at 250 degrees, I don't know if its too hot or not, can somebody tell me @ what temp will it become an issue for our engine?
2. if cooling is needed, should I be looking at a upgraded radiator as well as an oil cooler? what other options do I have?
3. also what brand do most people recommend?

Thank you for your help!

Here are my thoughts for you, till someone comes along that knows what he is talking about.

The coolant temperature at 250 degrees F should be OK, as long as the coolant hasn't reached its boiling point. The boiling point is determined by the coolant composition and the pressure the coolant is under.

So, with a coolant mixture of 50/50 water/ EG, and at a pressure of 15 psi, the engine should be OK running at 250 degrees F.

However, I wouldn't run an engine too long at that temperature.

Wait - someone is coming along -

You need to get that oil temp down. The rad is probably fine.

Max Temp

What is the safe maximum, constant, (lap after lap) oil temp for the twins on the track with thicker track oil ?

250 would be "safe" but if you are hitting that high on a regular basis then you are running the risk of going over which could be a problem.

  • 100-169F Warm Up Phase, high oil pressures
  • 170-189F Near Operating temps, oil pressures still higher
  • 190-225F Normal Operating Range, oil pressures normalize
  • 225-245F Middle End of operating range for track use, 5% drop in oil pressures
  • 245-255F Upper End of operating ranges for track use, 10% further drop in pressures on 0w20
  • 255-265F Red Zone of operating ranges for track zone, 0w20 starts to thin, oil pressures drop to questionable range.
  • 265F+ Playing with fire on 0w20

Thanx !
What kind of oil pressure drops (in psi) are you seeing at high temp with 20 ?

Once I hit 240 with 0w-20 my oil pressure at idle is almost nonexistent on the gauge, it's in the single digits and sets off the warning light.

Thanx, wanted to set my oil pressure alarm, 0 was the default on the gauge, and an alarm at zero is to late - lol.

I hit 250 on every run at Laguna last weekend with my Forester XT oil cooler.

Sounds like we both need something more heavy duty.
