I can tell already, as the generations and face-lift/revisions goes down with this car, it will be less and less mechanical and more computer-oriented.

If we put this on car nerd/ JDM-nerd talk. Zenki Chuki and Kouki (which mainly refers to S-Chassis) as an example

Zenki which is what we have now is probably going to be the most mechanical and purist version of the chassis

Chuki which is the 2017 upcoming car, we see owners from Zenki (who probably doesn't like the pure-ish "sports car" configuration) complaining that the car doesn't have this and that, and Toyota listened and now it has more computer crap. Like media buttons on steering wheel, and uhh..hill assist? What?

Kouki is going to be the death of the manual transmission, and MORE luxurious comforts controlled by computers.

That's what I think, I could be wrong. very wrong

I'm just happy with what I have
I have ben preaching this for a year. Do you wish to become a disciple?

There is unfortunately only one direction this car is headed from here (if my prophecies are true).

Exactly! Yes! I couldn't pin-point exactly where this car was heading to, but that's it!

Well just for fun let's run down the checklist on the changes over the last couple of FRS/86 model years:

Dumbed down suspension for "better" control and comfort (3 times now) - Check
Interior trim changes to give a more "upscale" feel and look - Check
Aggressive appearing front face on a car that can hardly be called aggressive - Check
Fancy tail and headlights that attempt a luxury car look in a car that is not luxury no matter how you dress it up - Check
A nominal HP increase to claim there was one - Check
Useless electronic gizmos again to seem luxury - Check
To be confirmed but at a guess an increase in weight - Check (probably)

So far hitting all the high points. They are headed for the more general pubic now and we can just suck it up and roll with it.

Don't forget the RS's. No real improvement, at all, in the car, and people still lined up to buy them. Sadly, the first-gen will be the high-water mark for "fun".

I think Toyota probably already thinks it has fulfilled its target-goal for reaching a certain audience. Like @Tcoat said, they're trying to cater now to the rest of the crowd.

"Time to try to make moar monies!" they shouted.

But regardless of what everybody thinks of the new Toyota 86's, I'm sure they'll still sell. There are going to be people who don't like the looks or feel of the car and there are going to be some people who are probably glad they did with the changes.

As much as I may seem to be criticising them I am not. It is the way of the automotive world and they either change or die. There are only so many people that were looking for the original versions and now they need to move on to another demographic. It really isn't a bad thing but it sucks for the people that love the original. These new ones will probably do well as much as the people here don't like it. There is another whole new market ready to move in and take our place.

And the market is only going to be more competitive - which is always good for the consumer I think.

ok ok i don't like the hill assist either and don't like buttons on the steering wheel, but we get one unpopular facelift and now the 86 is the gene-pocalypse? you guys don't think you're blowing things a little out of proportion?

For folks like me living in "The City", hill-assist is a god-send. Well, at least it is in San Francisco. And people get lazy here.

I am actually looking forward to see what Hyundai does with the Genesis brand now that it is marketed as a global brand. Same with Subaru and STI.

No. And this is only just one step in the transition. It is not just the facelift but the overall changes that are moving it away from the original. I am not saying that the 18s will be a Genny clone and it could take years for the full transformation but it will happen. The list of prior cars that this happened to is huge.
