Hey sorry for the late update...I haven't been to toyota yet. But I've been testing some thing's out and I may think it's something else and probably the culprit. I'm thinking it's the air conditioner clutch pulley. It doesn't do it in the morning because I drive the car to work super early. But it does after work and it's super hot out now(and yes canada does have summers and it isn't a frozen tundra) so when the AC pump is being worked a lot it starts making the sound. I don't know if people here have had any luck lately but that's my theory hopefully someone will figure it out

I have super hard shifts going up through any gear. Also used to have the whine but now it's more of a chugging sound

Bumping this because I finally took my car to the dealer for this noise.

Since we never came to the conclusion if this is considered normal or not, I took my car to the dealer and dropped it off.

I went with a ride along with the technician and he wasn't sure if it was normal or not. He said he will spend tomorrow looking into it.

Will post updates tomorrow.

I have the same issue. I brought mine into Toyota of Orange. I went for a ride with their foreman and was told the same thing as you. He says he will look into it and get back to me.

So the foreman took me for a ride in another FRS (which was in worse condition than my car), and it sounded similar but not quite.

I found it odd because I have a modified exhaust, so logically speaking you should hear more exhaust note than a whine. I have asked them to have a Toyota Rep look at the car.

I had Toyota Inspect the car and they deemed the whine is normal.

I am having a similar problem in my manual brz. Traveling at highway speeds in 6th Gear when I'm on the gas it sounds like I have a supercharger. The wine quickly Fades as I get off the gas. The wine is still audible when I have the cruise control on. Does anyone know what it could be? (66k miles,2013)

It is a light rear wheel drive car with tissue paper thick sound proofing. All you are hearing are the 100% normal sounds of such a car. All cars make the same sort of sounds but FWD hides them ahead of the firewall and even the budget sedans have more sound proofing than we do. You can add soundproofing if they bother you but don't worry there is something wrong. There isn't.

It's just gear whine -- normal for this car.

I have added sound deadening to my car (fatmat/dynamat) but it does not minimize this noise so I wouldn't waste your time with that.

I'm at 68k and I just started hearing this sound in my manual FRS. Only when cold, after driving for about 10 mins the sound goes away completely. I never heard this sound until now and I've had the car since it was new. This sound to me is not normal and indicates something is up. I suspect it is low trans fluid, that's my only thought. I'm gonna bring it by a shop to check it out. I'll update if we figure out what the issue is.

If you bought this car second hand check to see if there are yellow bushings in the diff or rear subframe, also check to see if there is one in the transmission cross memeber. These bushings people have upgraded to stiffer (noiser) for better feel of the car and shifting. If none of that exists, then it maybe a rear bearing starting to fail in the diff. Most likely pinion if it only does when on the gas and not decelerating with the clutch in. Have it checked out by mechanic.

So after listening to it more closely it is coming from the engine area. I don't hear it when not under load after it warms up. I found a video that has the exact same noise, could anyone take a look and let me know what they think that sound may be?
Video example: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOJAnWEanmk"]FRS - High Pitch Whine - YouTube[/ame]

In the comments it is mentioned this is due to a bad alternator diode can anyone with experience confirm or refute this?
