FR-S/BRZ MY13 vs MY14

I am pretty close to buying a BRZ/FR-S. Haven't gotten to test drive the FR-S yet, will decide which one after that.

I haven't bought a new car before so I had some questions about buying during the MY transition period. I don't see any major differences between the MY13 and MY14, so my questions have more to with pricing and possible future value. I am trying to weigh the cost savings vs having to drive my 98 zx2 for another 2-3 months before the MY14 starts shipping.

1) Realistically, how much of a discount can I expect in the MY13 models?(especially considering that these cars don't look like they are being over produced).

2) Looking down the line (maybe 3-4 years?), how much of a difference will there be in the car's value based on the MY? Or is mileage a better indicator?

PS: This seemed like the only sub-forum where both cars were being discussed together, hope this topic is not out of place.

PPS: First post here, been lurking for a while. Some very helpful and informative posts on the forum.

Welcome. Re your questions, from what I've read around here you are not going to see much end of year discounting on average as demand is still high in most regions - maybe $500? Geographic region will impact that number though.

Resale is mostly about year, mileage is secondary, so you will take a resale hit buying a 2013. I'd wait, unless you really need the car now.

Pick out a few cars you admire and then check out Kelly Blue book on a model that is three years old versus a model that is four years old. Check the difference. That might give you an idea whether it's worth paying the extra bump for a 14 or settle on a 13.

If allot of the problems have been fixed in the 2014, the 2013 will have a very low resale value.

It is starting to look like my hand may be forced. My 98 zx2 is deteriorating quite rapidly. I have been staying off the interstates. I don't know if I can wait till early November.

I did that for a couple of cars, but the depreciation seems to vary quite a bit based on the model. I guess it is difficult to estimate this for something new like the BRZ/FR-S. I might just have to take the hit.

Would those fixes not be applied to the MY13 as TSBs?

You will most likely have more negotiating room on a 13 BRZ than a 13 FR-S, as most Scion dealers stick to "Pure Price".

If you cannot get a FR-S/BRZ for well under MSRP you might as well wait for the 14 model.

He did give me a great deal. Have been waiting for delivery for a few weeks now. Hopefully it gets to me sometime next week.
