The picture I posted didn't show it well, but one of the 4 springs in the clutch assembly failed and caused this pressure plate to come apart. This is also what caused the discoloration. For what it's worth, my car did not have the clutch mod.
That makes no sense.
The clutch would have been fully disengaged with big clearance from the flywheel, surely?

It's crazy to think that all of this could be caused by a prematurely worn synchroid, but chances are it was.

This would only be true if the clutch disk wasn't floating on the splines, which it does. If it didn't float, that could the issue.

You either have clearance or you don't in the system, nothing the transmission does is going to affect the clutch in this way.

Mine is the same.

Update: Subaru is replacing my transmission next week when it comes in. It only took me taking the service manager for a ride, a quick call to the SOA rep by him, and in 30 minutes my transmission was on order. We are going to fill the new one with Motul 300.
