On the way back home, walked up and down the strip before my flight.
Well hardly a fair review then. I have been there several times for 4 or 5 days at a stretch. Loads to do if you can get around easy.

I'd personally fly 6 hours, then drive 4+hours than fly for 8 hours. Airplanes are not comfortable.
When we flew up to Seattle last year we had a 3 hour layover there. I made $1400 from the dingdingding.

What things would you suggest doing?

The things I asked if you did for a start. The Clarke County museum is really cool. Not really a "museum" but a series of of houses frown each era starting for about 1880 and going up to 1970s. They are fully furnished and equipped with era appropriate stuff.

Tcoat makes the most out of a trip. I'm trying to channel his approach to planning our upcoming summer tour.

That is because I usually try to cram two weeks worth of stuff into one week.
They is certainly something to be said for the "screw plans I will wing it" method I used for the NorCal trip last week.

I really enjoyed all the tours we did. The balance is there somewhere. I'm looking into sights to see that aren't too far away from paved roads.

The happy medium can be very hard to find. If you try to plan things out then there isn't much room for spontaneity without a chain reaction interfering with plans. If you just let things play out then it is really hard to plan something in the middle of it. You could of course go for scheduled spontaneity but that usually results in chaos.
