How long ago (date wise) did you take it in and did you send out for documented oil analysis?

Heck, if I weren't so damn lazy, I would drop the pan on my 2013 FR-S, just to get a look at the oil screen.

I can add my own 2013 FR-S to the list of cars described here.

-- June 2016: I bought the car from a Toyota dealer. With one previous owner and in excellent shape at 23,300 miles, it's an August 2012 production model. Since I bought it I've done only a few cosmetic mods and nothing mechanical.

-- January 2019, 35,200 miles: The car drew the recall notice, and I brought it to Toyota of Nashua (New Hampshire), not the dealer who sold me the car. We've been buying Toyotas from this dealer since 1990, and they've done almost every repair on our cars since then. One of the service reps is excellent, and I always work with him unless he's unavailable and a problem can't wait. They had the car for seven days (a weekend included) and supplied a no-charge, new Corolla loaner. The tech who worked on the car has a reputation for careful, reliable work.

Five items are listed on repair invoice: valve spring kit, seal packing, oil filter, oil, coolant. The number of hours isn't listed.

My car drove well when I retrieved it with no sign of the extent of the work done except for a drop in the gas milage. I was getting almost 30MPG; that dropped to about 27.5+.

-- May 2019, 36,600 miles: The CEL and VSC lights go on, with OBD code P0016. Some research shows this FR-S light combo occurring back in 2014 and a Toyota service bulletin about the ECU needing a flash to update settings. I brought the car back to Nashua. They replaced (not flashed) the ECU and had the car for only half a day. No charge to me. At that point, the car drove better than it ever did since I bought it--and at 31MPG. I'm not an especially aggressive driver, but I certainly don't baby the accelerator.

-- Mid-June 2019, 37,300 miles: I started hearing bearing noise at cold starting. Back to Nashua, who called in the Toyota FTS (field technical specialist). This, from the invoice: The FTS and Toyota of Nashua tech performed "inspection and found some metal in the oil and bearing wear, some damage on the cam housing and the cams due to the metal in the oil." The result was authorization for a short block replacement. The car was finally ready exactly 30 days later. One delay was caused by the unexpected need for shimming the valves and arrival of parts. I had a loaner (another new Corolla) the entire time. It's too early to judge the gas milage.

Overall, it obviously would have better if the recall repair hadn't had such messy effects, and I certainly would have preferred to drive my FR-S rather than the Corollas (which, I hasten to add, are truly nice choices for people looking for that type of transportation). However, the people responsible for the problems made no excuses and accepted responsibility, so I have no complaints about the way that Toyota or the dealer handled everything. The final cost to me, aside from some inconvenience, was nothing--zero dollars.

^^ I'm going to hope that I don't have similar problems so I don't have to experience the good service after the fk up. I'm glad it worked the way it's supposed to for you

Looks like lint from rags to me, that will definitely eat an engine up.

We have special lint free towels for engine work, they made a big deal about it a few years back.

I did the recall for the engine spring valves in March/April 2019 at Stouffville Toyota, they had a lot of issues and took about 10 days to finish the job. Got the car back, the noise level was louder, hardly drove it, about 3 months later, it ceased yesterday. They are trying to say, they don't know why, but I'm liable for it to replace engine or rebuild. Can someone help please? Thank you!!!

Since you are in Canada you have an option. Although technically outside of the warranty period the CAMVAP has been known to intervene in exceptional cases. You may have an exceptional case. Worth talking to them even if they can just provide you with other options.

Got my recall done about a month or two ago and was working completely fine up until about a week ago when the car just started leaking oil. I towed it into the dealership, Diablo Subaru, and they set me up with a loaner car and the repair was covered under the warranty. Turns out I have a cracked head so thats very fun!
