Differential swap kit?
Anybody have insight on the rumor of a differential swap kit for the FRS? I recently heard that there was something floating around out there for a Ford 8.8 diff. If you have, please shoot me a PM. Thanks.

That kit comes with 1000hp rated axels, and a 1000hp rated alumninum driveshaft. you have to pay extra for the carbon fiber (understandable). I agree they should advertise it with the aluminum driveshaft shown though.
thats about $2,000 dollars in axels and driveshaft. Not a horrible deal. But I am not running anything close to needing 1000hp axels and driveshaft. |

I'm guessing the people calling this expensive have never swapped major drivetrain components before. Its a good deal. A lot of machining and custom parts in that kit. See above.

Limited choices make for a high price.. I get that.. But that's still A ridiculous price to pay for a diff.. |

That is a ton of money for a rear end . I do appreciate the fact that it is not a high volume item, but still.
The key item, and what I like most about the kit is the elegance of the billet rear cover. Because of the miracles of CNC machining and the availability of inexpensive scan tools, IF they are willing to put the time in, anyone with a scanner and Solidworks skills can create a very similar kit for a lot less. (As long as their time if free) And maybe use the Cobra 8.8 so as to score an alloy differential case. Buy a diff with a locker for about $200, tons of them around, if not both the locker and the rebuild kits can be bought for about $900 If I wanted to doodle the rear cover/mount, I would spend a couple of hundred dollars to have it 3D printed just to make sure that it all fit before I spent the money on the block of alloy and CNC mill time. The Driveshaft shop makes IRS axles to order. 1000 HP claim might be nice marketing claim, but overkill for 99.99% of the planet. How the hell am I going to validate that claim anyways? Tons of drive-shaft shops out there that will sort that bit out for you. Carbon is cute, but you would never measure any difference for the $$$. Drive-shafts that will do the job are about $500 from most suppliers. The Miata V8 conversion crowd does the rear end conversion for their swaps for about $2500-$3000 including the diff, (that includes a vendor profit margin) so they would have a meltdown at this price. I did mine for $1700 with axles from the driveshaft shop. The above all said, it is a good thing to see V8 conversion vendors for the Twins, this is something that has worked well in the Miata world and I hope does as well in the FRS/BRZ genre.
