I hate phone interviews. Do you not have the option of using Skype? My current job I did a Skype interview, and I recently did a Skype interview. Seems like a really good solution.

That could be a problem since I don't look like Brad Pitt.

Doesn't sound like they take the phone interview very seriously anyway then. If it's being outsourced..

And the worst thing imo is once you get there the hiring crew digs out a stack of questions to ask, and they get so busy writing everything down as if they are gonna use my answers for their next performance appraisal.

Worse one I ever did was an AUTOMATED phone prescreening. The company rep gave me a phone number, told me I would need to answer specific questions and that I would have 2 minutes per question. I did not have the questions in advance.

You did have the option to re-record each answer once.

I did the first of 5 questions on the second recording. On the second question I spent the 2 minutes explaining why I would NOT be continuing with this process and hung up.

The HR rep did call me back and asked if I wanted to try again. I said "No thanks".

What the hell?

I'm in charge of hiring a few poor souls to be my paid slaves this year. Can't wait. Want to be doing Skype at the very least, but may devolve to phone calls to see if I actually want to invest any appreciable time and effort into some people.

So I suppose then they wouldn't be upset if you used an automated system to answer the questions...

You realize that properly done interviews are made very stressful on purpose right? I will put some people through hell just to see how they deal with it all. I (and most well trained and experienced interviewers) could not care less what your actual answers are since about 80% of what people say is pure bullshit anyway. We want to see your reactions and how you deal with pressure, deadlines, conciseness, verbalization, problem solving and overall thinking on your feet.
The famous "Tell me about sometime you made a mistake and how did you fix it" question is not to learn about a mistake you made but to see your reaction. Never answer "Well I have never made a mistake" or go into a long rambling response as we don't care what the content is we want to see how fast you come up with an answer and how you convey your thoughts. The good news would be that if you reached the level in the hiring process where you are talking to somebody using these methods it means you are seriously being considered. Somebody doing a brief "where have you worked? What have you done?" interview is not likely the level making decisions. Now, this all applies to skilled, technical or professional positions and not labour jobs. Labour interviews usually consist of "Are you breathing? Can you read?". Sometimes we will even skip the reading requirement if we rally need a body.

In reality with many prescreen you may as well be talking to an automated system anyway!
