Paint Quality

Anyone else having issues with the paint on their BRZ?

I have a WRB BRZ with 10k miles that I picked up last August. The front bumper and hood are already full of chips past the paint and there is a spot on my rear spoiler on the corner that the paint is simply peeling away for no good reason at all.

The paint on these things is garbage. Super thin, and apparently not much of a clearcoat whatsoever. I have a 2001 Corvette ZO6 as well with 52k miles that has seen the same roads and even track time with hardly any chips in the front at all. The BRZ has just been on simple city roads and highways.

It's incredibly disappointing.

It's just the nature of how soft the paint is.

If you want to... repaint the front end and clear bra the front bumper, entire hood, mirrors, fenders, and the rear quarter panels.

It's inevitable.

So Subaru's do have shitty paint and it's not just my car. That's comforting.

LOL Actually, all cars made within the past 10 years or so... blame the Enivornmental hippies. We have to use water based paint.

My next car will be clear braed before leaving the dealer lot.

+1 on the paint quality. So many polishes and what not. Just to keep the paint intact

Keep in mind you're comparing this car to a car that was double the price when it was sold.

Paint chips are very common these days as already said

Yeah, Subaru has always been notorious for garbage paint and the BRZ is no exception.

Imperative to clear bra these cars. I've had mine for 16 months now, and not a stone chip in sight (3M film on front bumper, full hood and fenders). I do a ton of highway driving and drive it in the winter.

As everyone said all cars at this point use water based paint, the tough thick lead paints are long gone. I deal with a lot of newer model cars after they've been used and roughly 75% of the cars I check have chipped hoods, roofs and/or front bumpers. The ones that don't are either a lot newer or have been repaired already. Subaru is just one of the earlier automakers to fully go water based, I think it was even from the late 90s that they were going this route.

I have 3M clearbra, and still have paint chips after 8 months. Can thank the poor winter road conditions & salt for that.

On the same boat with many of you guys. I jacked up my car and placed it on jack stands for oil change. When I took off the jack stands, paint chipped off where the car rests on the jack stands........Speechless!

Paint chips? that's nothing. I got rust-like spots forming in spots throughout my body already, yeah they are like half the size of a dime at the moment, but we all know how that works.. Not really sure what these bodies are made of but I didn't expect me to be finding rust spots already. I guess considering where I live, PA, I have to deal with road salt and all, but I still would wash my car weekly to try to keep up with the weather factor... But hell, only a 2 year old car and I am finding rust formations.. Not happy.

I drive a Scion FRS by the way, so its not just Subaru.
