Ummm big and heavy are the linage of muscle cars. If they are not then I would not even classify them as one.

Of course, people may come out and say muscle cars aren't supposed to handle well, but I don't want a car to handle worse than it's direct competition by much if I can help it. I won't deny that they look kind of cool, but I think the mustang looks cooler. This is subjective, of course, but I feel like the Challenger is more some sort of retro-ideal version of the car whereas the mustang has really evolved throughout its life. I don't know how I feel about the Camaro... They all big an' heavy though, that's for sure. It blows me away that our cars only weight like 2700 pounds. That's just awesome. |

I think the distinction between "muscle car" and "pony car" got blurred someplace over the decades. In fact the term "pony car" has pretty much disappeared. What is now called a "muscle car" would not have cut it back in the day when the terms were formed. I think we are using two totally different definitions of the words based on our ages. Pony cars were good in the straight and alright in a turn. Muscle cars rocked the straight but totally sucked in any form of turn (why do you think stock car tracks are big ovals?). If somebody had called a Mustang or Camaro a "muscle car" back in the 70s they would probably have been laughed at. The Challenger even back ten sort of blurred the line between the two segments. As you said the Challenger is more true to the old school muscle car format and the Mustang and Camaro followed their pony car roots. Muscle cars: Pony cars: Blurred line between the two:

But I do think that this is what muscle cars have become. "pony car" doesn't feel quite right for modern day camaros and mustangs to me, and it is very common to call them muscle cars. You are definitely right about us using two different ideas of the muscle car, though. I do have an appreciation for real muscle cars, but I feel like, in spite of my 16-18 year old self, I would no longer choose to own one. I used to hang out at the local dragstrip with my then brother-in-law and brother waaay too much. I almost feel like my love of Japanese RWD cars is a rebellion against an old self. |
