Correct. Also, the acceleration difference is most noticeable from a standing start. Roll on acceleration should be very similar unless Subaru really got the overall gearing wrong.

The auto is the safe route for me. You get the best of both worlds with some sacrifices. My last stick was an MR2T and I dread the laborious 3rd pedal in daily congested freeway commutes. A stick is great for the occasional jaunt but not as a daily driver.

That said, an auto on an 86 is not even a remote possibility without the true manual-auto and paddle shifters it has. Some autos even in manual mode will upshift for you but not ours so you can bounce off the redline all day if you choose. For safety reasons, it does downshift if you lug it enough.

Moreover, even in full auto mode, our cars will downshift if you tug on the paddle shifter placing you in quick control in a corner. It will eventually go back to D mode.

My daily commute home starts with a busy freeway in full auto. Then I switch to manual mode when I hit the mountain roads, mostly going between 2nd and 3rd gear. I love the rev-matching as well, just like on my old SMG M3.

Like I said, best of both worlds.

Nice bit of trolling there that you threw in at the end of an otherwise useful post...

Is that a spider in your avatar or are you just angry about the last movie?

There are plenty of planetary transmissions in high end sportscars, depending on your definition.

There is no inherent superiority to a DCT over a planetary gearbox. In fact, the planetary transmission is more efficient, lighter and handles more torque. Also, planetary transmissions are likely to be more durable.

It is ~40-50 lb weight penalty. As for what I am about to say, this was told to me by a service rep / manager at a Subaru dealership: Apparently with equal gearing the auto was beating the manual, even without the ability for hard launches; "they" (being Toyota/Subaru) decided to give the auto more fuel efficient gearing so as to not alienate the MT crowd. I personally have no proof of this, just relaying what was told to me.

That makes no sense, I see you are still smoking things that wouldn't be smoked.

I wouldn't put it past a car company to spy on customers. I'm not saying Subaru is but sometimes companies are overcome with temptation to do unethical actions or they were being threatened some by someone in a government.
