I think replacing the factory screen/radio whatever with a mount for a smartphone might be the best option. Well, not if your smartphone is called an iPhone :P
My current phone is 4.3" screen, still a tiny bit too small for use in a car probably. I think the newest Samsung is 4.65", that sounds pretty good. In the end, a tablet is just a large phone with missing functionality, might as well use your phone if you can. It's got the GPS, the music, even the engine monitoring apps :P |

I like the idea of being able to use my iPad but turth is I have an iPhone, and with the AHA radio system in the BRZ I think the only think I'll really be missing is the ability to run OBD2 apps like DashCommand.

seven inch tablets are around 7.5x4.5. Double Din is 7x4 so with some tricky dash work or an ability to slide it down into the dash from the top it all might work but that will need to be done by someone braver than I.

Retarded crap in cars is retarded.
I have enough issue trying to hit the touch-screen radio "buttons" in my GTI. Putting a touch screen computer (cuz a tablet is just a computer with Downs) in a car, especially if it's on some kind of not-perfectly-stable mount, will only result in routinely pressing the wrong thing because there was a pebble on the road, then getting distracted trying to fix it, and then getting in an accident. This crap needs to stay out of cars. Music, totally hands-free phone systems, and...nothing more. Simple, tactile HVAC controls. Any additional functionality, including navigation, should not work except when fully stopped. A car is a car. It is not an office and driving on roads with other human beings is not a video game. Mounting an iPad in your vehicle should result with your licence being rescinded. |

Well I think you could plug in a phone or tablet, and set it to either GPS or engine monitoring app or music, and leave it alone.

Actually, this got me thinking: what is the purpose of having the desire to mount iPad in a car? Are you trying to mimic a policemen/women to have a functional working computer in the car for whatever reason. What Maxim said was right. Those gadgets should be easy to use or completely hands-free. By looking at the tablet for one more second you could be into an accident that can be avoided in the first place.
But the back-seat drivers would love this idea...

I like the idea of a larger GPS screen, better music interface, easy access to communication information on a larger easier to quickly read screen, and I could go on and on. It is not like any sane person would watch movies or tv while driving but a large touch screen is not much different from the tactile knobs and buttons you are used to. Most luxury cars have data connectivity built in for many applications and I have not heard or a sudden rash of mercedes and bmw's be driven off of cliff's.

I've had cars with touch screen control of basically everything....simple physical controls work better for certain things, most notably the climate controls. The other stuff can be capacative touch and that's great, lots of functionality and much safer access to thousands of songs than trying to swap out a bunch of CDs while driving. But mounting an iPad? Yeah, definitely not. Like I said...reaching out and going through the menus in my GTI's touch screen stereo is difficult enough. That's mitigated by the steering wheel controls which are great, but navigating to a new artist or album still requires going to the touch screen. I don't even like how THAT distracts. |
