New 2017 Limited Edition (when it comes out) BRZ or 2016 Veloster Turbo

DUDES whats up!

Newer here, but i have fallen in a deep obsession with the BRZ... that being said, i currently drive a slightly modded 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. This is hands down one of my favorite cars specifically for it's look. but lets be serious for a second, when you are obsessed with power as i am (mind you, i do not care for V6 and 8s and prefer the 4 bangers) and your tiny little 1.6L WITH a turbo only puts out 200 horses, you cry from time to time. Yes i can mod more and get a bit faster, but I am starting to desire more base power without a forced induction (even though i will definitely super or turbo my BRZ if i get one). My point of this post is... i NEVER see anyone post about Veloster unless im on the Veloster forum... and never see comparison between VT and BRZ.

I was hoping for some friendly opinions.

My end goal is to kick my mom's ass in her stupid little bumble bee camero (JK). but seriously
i want to push past 350 horses in a 4 cylinder, beautiful sports car.
i love the thought of RWD,
i don't need back seat space,
i hear only the best about the handling of the BRZ
dat body and ass doe...

on the other hand

my Veloster looks so good
i have good torque and lovely sound from my current mods
i like the options and styling i have
i dont like the unreliable nature of Hyundai.
i like the idea of a boxer engine
Suburu is such a cool brand to me
JDM vs KDM?

i wont expect it, but will hope someone will interact with me because i just want people to tell me how worth it the BRZ is... i have had the HARDEST time finding threads on modifications which is weird. Like i want exhaust and boost and all that fun stuff to make the ride even more wonderful and look cooler. Anyway, let me know your thoughts!

It's not worth it if you don't even own it and want to throw a turbo on it. Not sure on how much help you will get here either, this forum isn't very fond of the veloster...

This isn't to say you can't turbo it but if your goals are 350+ it's really not the right car for you. Just buy a mustang or wrx.

you want a beautiful (in your eyes) RWD sports car that handles well and is (capable) of 350 whp, love Subaru, hate reliability issued of Hyundai but love the look of your veloster. It sounds like you've pretty much convinced yourself and just want support in your decision.

Get the BRZ

I am still kinda new to the car world. What is your reasoning behind why the Veloster is hated on? good point though on the WRX.

10 year warranty? What's not to like?
The chassis is the differentiation. Twins were built to accentuate the handling, not power.
350? Get a vette.

The BRZ / FRS is not the vehicle to try and make power with.

Neither is a Veloster.

If you consider yourself "obsessed with power" and are trying to choose between these two vehicles... you have never witnessed power in a vehicle.

If you want 350 HP and want a 4 cyl Hyundai, get a used Genesis Coupe 2.0T but be prepared to mod it, the car is a lot of fun but many of the components suck. With the right mods it can be a great car but the brakes are terrible (I have even heard the Brembos are pretty bad- I had a base model and the base brakes were complete shit), the TC, ABS and SC are bad to the point of dangerous and you really need a LSD to put the power down- so start with an R-Spec. The pre-2013 models (BK1) put down a lot less power, so go for 13-14 only. The suspension is OK but overall the car cannot hold a candle to the Twins. The ONLY thing the Genesis Coupe has over the Twins is power and moddability.

Over 1 lap the stock Gen will destroy the stock Twins on most road courses, but over a race, the Gen weaknesses catch up to the car and the Twins shine. Brakes matter. In autocross, the Twins will humiliate any Gen or Camaro.

I had a 13 Gencoupe and I loved the car, but the Twins are better for every reason you read about in reviews. But they lack cajones- it is what it is. As for the Veloster.... NO, just no. Not a sports car, not a performance car, not a good car.

the Twins may not have much power, but they weigh nothing and you can strap a FI kit on there if you need the power. You may not get up 350 HP, but do the math-

(using published BHP numbers)

Camaro SS- 455 HP at 3700 lbs. 8.13 lbs/HP
Twins- 200 HP at 2800 lbs. 14 lbs/HP (you'd need 344 HP to get to 8.13)
Gen- 275 HP at 3400 lbs. 12.36 lbs/HP (you'd need over 400 HP to get to 8.13)

The Gen can be modded to near 8 lbs/HP with a turbo mod + meth, tuning and some weight savings (you can shed 100 lbs from a Gen pretty easy). This would be a seriously expensive project but still cheaper than a SS. For less than $1,000 I was at about 320 BHP no turbo mod, no meth, just intake, exhaust and tune on 93 gas.

The Twins would have a hard time reaching that power:weight with pump fuel even with a turbo or SC kit. But for around $8,000-10,000 you can do it and still spend way less than you would for a SS.

The FRS even at stock would beat either car in an autocross (it's done every weekend). So define fast?

I don't hate them per say they just aren't my first choice when it comes to cars. I feel like they make some pretty good car, and even their sporty cars are ok, but in most people's opinions (which are largely worthless, as yours is really all that matters) there are better options out there for the price.

FWIW I test drove a 2013 genesis and 2013 frs back to back and in the handling, feeling of connectedness, cosmetic appeal, and driving experience the frs won hands down. The Genesis of course was quicker. Both cars were in the same price range but offer markedly different experiences.

I've never driven a veloster but they get shit on by people all the time, admittedly most of which have probably never drive one.

As for the get a different car if power is important to you thing. I'm speaking from experience, not attacking you. I bought an FRS and thought I would be happy with bolt ons, but once they were all on, realized I wanted more. Then I bought a turbo but backed out because my job changed and I needed a 4 seater. The WRX was perfect for my situation. Admittedly, even with the extra power and practicality I miss the raw feeling of the FRS and the RWD coupe layout.

I suggest test driving an FRS/BRZ first and if you love everything but the power then maybe consider it. But make sure you have the funds for not only forced induction but also some saved incase things go south. These are high compression motors that weren't created for boost, errors can and likely will occur.

That is where i get kinda finicky in decision making. i WANT boost. i love it. i find the ARX to be very appealing power-wise, but i am so unattracted to the car's appearance which is a huge thing to me. i want to hope that any type of mods i would do to a BRZ could be backed up with the appropriate inner upgrades (basically ensuring that the car can handle a turbo without exploding). I havent found any other cars out there that match my end goal. I have seen chatter about maybe one day an STI BRZ being introduced but then i also see why it would be pointless. At the end of the day, i would enjoy a car i can have fun driving, love looking at, and one that has a lot of build potential. i Have driven one and was only slightly underwhelmed with the interior features, but that is easily fixable. So all in all, i will still do more research but i have a feeling im going to end up in a BRZ. Also, thank you for your replies! i love seeing other's thoughts and knowledge

Go for frs/brz lol sounds like you already leaning towards it, besides if you're ready to put money into force induction you might as well one step up and go over suspension and bushing to ensure it still handle well with turbo or supercharger.

If you have money, you have the POOOOOOWWWWER!!
