Wheel Color Change... Suggestions?

Hey all

I think this would be the appropriate section for this. Recently I accidentally destroyed the wheel finish with a wheel cleaner of which I was unaware was so acidic.

So now my wheels look like crap ha. The time is near for new tires so it seems appropriate to change the color now. Thinking I'll probably have them powder coated because it'll hold up longer than spray paint, I want it to be more permanent anyway.

The wheels used to be a chromeish finish but I can't get that with powder. I like the flashy look thus that choice! What colors would look good on firestorm?

Leaning towards white, maybe bronze? I think silver would be too plain and I personally don't like black wheels on a red car. If the car was white or black it would be easy ha but red makes life a little more difficult. Should probably just repaint the car right?

I love red with white wheels (how my last car looked), but I feel like the design of the wheel would look with bronze or graphite.

I haven't had these long, they won't sell for much with a messed up coating. I would love real wheels but like most people on here they are too expensive not in a position to drop serious cash on "real" wheels

tires are 245/40 Nitto NT01's, they run thick but handle like a dream. 8.5" wide wheels, filling them up with tire instead of stretching them out. Its super fun to drive

Funny you say that, a friend of mine was saying the same thing!

Also if anyone has pictures to back up a suggestion that would be just swell

Some say powder coating alloy wheels will ruin them, (metalurgically) some say it won't, but I guess that's up to you to decide (and research).

I'm pretty sure the are just cast aluminum with some sort of coating its not a true polish

@White64Goat I've read/heard mixed things about powder coating. My basic understanding of the science behind it is that because they bake the powder onto the wheels, the heat basically heat treats/hardens the metal potentially making it more brittle. We like this sometimes for certain systems at my work because it makes the metal harder but it fails in a less desirable fashion than lets say a standard aluminum which is fairly soft. I guess it really depends on the shop, I've heard some people can powder coat around 300 degrees rather than 450+ which would be ideal for wheels as that isn't a massive increase over standard temperatures.

I guess it depends, theoretically a wheel can be made drastically more brittle if its heated about 400. But then again I've seen good arguments on both side so i dunno haha

I think bronze will look good. I also suggest that you use plastidip first to try the colors you like. It's easier to remove if you don't like the outcome and not expensive.

Ha yea I guess thats not a bad idea. It can look half decent with plastidip. the timing is just working out nice with me needing tires about now, be nice to just do it once
@ajaxthebetter talked the the powdercoating guys, said it would be difficult/not possible to do two colors. If the wheels were two pieces then yea that might work. But I don't really like black wheels on red cars :/

Yeah. Black is kind of ubiquitous now anyways. My defacto red car guide is looking up Caymans, and I saw a few with the black/red theme--looks good on those cars, though their red is a deeper color.
