Unhappy BRZ Limited owners - I accidentally took my keyless entry keyfob for an ocean swim...

I sprinted back to the beach, cracked open the keyless entry with the flat tip of the valet key (cleverly designed, btw) and found out that the key circuitry is protected by a rubber gasket.

Despite the fact that I was 8 hours away from my other key and had been in the water for a solid minute, Subaru's engineering team really saved my ass on this one.

tl;dr keyless ignition/bluetooth key is decently waterproof

They still work.

I think you should thank Toyota Prius engineers instead.

What do you do if your key fob stops working? I guess you can get into the car through the trunk but can you start the engine?

I also put mine through the washing machine. I took the trunk key out and shook the water out, and it's still working months later. Very happy they thought to protect the electronics!

Yup. It's a Toyota key. Innards look identical to the Lexus keys I've taken apart to replace the batteries.

Dropped my fob in dirty oil while changing the oil, that was fun. But a little disassembly and cleaning and all turned out ok. Yeah the fobs seem pretty durable.

You can use the physical key you pull out of the key fob to unlock the driver's side door to get into the car, and you should be able to start the engine if you hold the key fob in close proximity to the start button.

Fair enough. I'll just leave it at Japanese engineering then.

Yup, a guy on another brz forum mentioned that a Subaru tech advised holding a dead key fob right up to the start button so that it'd be within range for the car to passively read it.
