I used to clay and use the straight edge razor method but it got so bad that I just gave up.

I do have a tiny rock chip. I've often pondered taking a pic and mallet to it

I have a small star chip. Normally the heat cold cycle of winter would make it spread like mad. Nope not this time it is completely stable.

Chips should be filled as to not make a crack, most auto glass companies will do it for $50. Also just putting this out there, don't ever use safelite, they are the walmart of the auto glass industry, always use your local installer they will appreciate your business much more. Also don't buy the OEM glass, it is way too expensive and is not very well made as most people have found by the splitting around the edges. Most local auto glass companies will use a pilkington glass or a PGW which is a very high quality glass. And always check with your insurance first, most people have glass coverage without knowing it. It should not cost you anywhere near $1000 to have it replace "I saw some people saying $700-$1000".
