also a note about the original ecu which don't know if this would be helpful or not but.

it was attempted to flash a calibration using tactrix, it flashed but then was basically dead, and when we tried to go back it wouldn't even connect. so I am worried if maybe the tactrix messed up something else in the car

Ecu dead as in car wont start or ecu doesnt respond to tactrix read or write requests any more.

If it wont respond to tactrix read or write requests

Did you say yes to correct checksums if ecuflash asked before flashing ?. If you said No the ecuflash flasges rom to ecu with incorrect checksum. When ecu starts it then sees incorrect checsum and shuts down as it detects incorrect checksum.

Or did you flash a rom you edited with a possibly incorrect definition.

If its first one you can usually recover ecu by doing the following
Remove vattery power from car for at least 30 minutes
Have laptop ready to go to reflash a known good rom to ecu, stock rom is best

Replace battery terminal
Turn ignition full on, wait 15 secs then flash ecu with the stock rom
Do this on first turn on of ignition dont try to start.

If its second option ie you flashed edited rom thats likey corrupt. Try above proceedure but it usually fails as ecu is off in some weird loop due corrupted rom image.

You mght recover it with brzedit or ECUTEK systems. But you wont with tactix as its not good at recovering that type of problem.

You best bet is buying another ecu

He did, this is the one with the error codes. Could that be that the ECU hasn't been paired properly?

The pairing and flasging tune is independant. You can flash an ecu in a car without pairing it.

All that happens if its not paired is car wont start

No having it pared wont cause the type of codes being seen here.

You will get a code related to communications\security but not fuel pump or other hardware codes.
