Same boat here. Would have been even nicer as a liftback too, but the rear seats were a deal maker. Being able to fit two extra passengers in a pinch works. Main reason why I didn't consider a Z or S2000. I'd probably be in an evo without the FRS.

Well there was the entire IROC racing series that used Camaros. I owned an '83 Z28 (purchased new) and always enjoyed driving it, but really it was more of a highway cruiser than a mountain pass car. That's why it's garage mate was eventually an '85 MR2.

Yeah I sort of agree - back then I wouldn't have called it a 'muscle car' because muscle cars from back then wouldn't handle anywhere near as well as the Supra (although modern 'muscle cars' are something completely different). The philosophy behind the MKIV Supra design was very different than something like an NSX, FD RX-7, MR2 Turbo. It was unique - and in many ways breaking the mold like the modern GT-R did. Doesn't sound like the new one will be quite as game changing relative to what's out there today, but I could be wrong.

BTW I can't find it but one of the magazines (Car and Driver? Motor Trend?) had a great comparison between the Supra, FD RX-7, MR2 Turbo, Corvette, and maybe something else.

Also regarding the FD RX-7, I make fun, and the car had plenty of ridiculous issues with reliability and build quality. But to be clear I love that car and what it stood for when they built it. So fun to drive, and I'm a huge fan of rotaries.

I owned one for a while. It was a 93 NA (also had an 89 turbo) and I never considered it to be a sports car. I considered my Datsun 280Z and Fiat 124 to be sports cars. The Supra was more of a GT car in my opinion. It was solid, relatively heavy for its time and kind of wallowed when pushed hard in the corners because there was a lot of weight in the front and shocks were on the soft side. I sold it after about 6 months. This was 1998. Three year later F&F came out and the price of Supras started to shoot up. LOL, story of my life!

I drove a 95 NA last year and would pick my FRS 9 out of 10 times for the FUN factor. I've also driven a BPU Supra previously and even though it was faster, it still had the same driving feel as the NA version. The FRS is definitely a nimbler platform and it looks like the new Supra will be cut from the same cloth.

I'm liking the upright greenhouse and broad hips the more I see it. The front is funky, still. But it also looks like it wants to be a convertible. Something tells me that it could be in the cards eventually. Lexus doesn't have a luxury convertible and I think this would be a good candidate for a bit of a luxury redesign with a big, predator grill.

I agree. The front is funky, but when considering it looks more like an evolution of the MKIII than the MKIV, it kinda makes sense to the eyes. Some renderings just don’t do it justice either. The shots of the car in the shipping container next to the MKIV is my fav. If I don’t upgrade to a used Cayman in the future then this will likely be my next choice. There is really nothing else that captures my interest and checks all the boxes.

I dunno. I feel like them trying to incorporate styling cues from the MKIV has thrown off the car's proportions a little. The MKIV was not a nimble low cog sportscar. It was bordering on GT car with it's bulbous lines and fat booty.

It wasnít borderline anything. It was a GT car. It pretty much always was.
