Issue With Inlet Camshaft Timing Distributor (reference from Reddit post)

Just saw this posting on r/ft86 referencing an issue with the inlet camshaft timing distributor (sic): "Well. I'm working for Toyota Europe. Yes, i am one of those guys who's changing your valve springs. Today during my 18th Recall, i faced an issue. While controling the valvetiming i realized that the timing-distributor, doesn't lock properly. If i had mounted it like that, (like one guy somewhere in this country did) it would have caused some massive enginedamage."

Has this already been brought up? Not sure if it's a new issue or not.

I work on cars every day, and don't have the first clue what's circled in that picture. Other than the end of a camshaft of course.

This is the only reference to this in the shop manual. Weird.

"Long story short: There is a chance that there will be another Engine related recall, since it is a production error. In the picture above you can see the rear side of a Inlet-camshaft-timing-distributor. Inside the red Circle is a plate with the lock-spring behind it. That Plate may loosen up while doing the Valve spring recall, risking massive engine damage

So he's a mechanic and he's taken it upon himself to determine the fault and announce that Toyota will be issuing another engine related recall?

Sounds like a bit of a reach to me. I went through and fixed his typos, I could barely get through 4 sentences.

And I still don't get it. The plate is clearly still intact, what is the pending catastrophic engine damage coming from?

Sounds like he's a mechanic who shouldn't be working on Subaru engines.

This was one of the major reasons why I sold the my FR-S. I got the CEL with the error code for Cam Shaft Sensor...wasn't the sensor, costed me me around 1300 WITH Toyota assistance and dealership assistance to fix one sprocket. Didn't feel comfortable owning the car after this.

While they had my engine apart they found 2 camshaft sensors that were bad, one apparently rotted and the other sending inconsistent signals as well as an oil control valve was bad. The tech that is doing the work seemed fully confident that he had the problems solved and they covered the parts and additional labor time so hopefully he's right. I'll get better info when I go to pick the car up (hopefully) today.

That backing plate only needs to stay in place until the sprocket assembly is mounted to the camshaft. Otherwise, if it, the valve plunger and spring are set aside, they can all go back together just fine.

It is NOT the port for the center lock. You have to go way deeper to get to that. It is a related mode switching valve.

This has been covered in the past but all I've seen is misinformation. Look for item 13 on the functional diagram.
